Jenkins, Williams, Odom out for season
By The Associated Press
Three key defensive players were lost for the season during Sunday's NFL games: Jets nose tackle Kris Jenkins, Falcons cornerback Brian Williams, and Bengals end Antwan Odom.
Jenkins was placed on injured reserve Monday with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee against Buffalo, a huge loss for one of the leagues top-ranked defenses.
"That's hard,"coach Rex Ryan said. "It's going to be hard to replace Kris. There's not many Kris Jenkins playing in this league. Obviously, his impact is going to be felt."
Jenkins will need reconstructive surgery, as will Williams, who sustained the same injury when the Falcons beat Chicago. Williams landed awkwardly on his right knee while defending a pass to Greg Olsen in the end zone in the fourth quarter.
Williams is the second starter on defense to suffer a season-ending knee injury. Rookie defensive tackle Peria Jerry went out on Sept. 20.
Falcons coach Mike Smith had no update on running back Jerious Norwood (hip) and safety William Moore (hamstring).
The third veteran defender sidelined was Odom, who entered the weekend tied for the league lead with eight sacks. Odom had surgery for a torn right Achilles' tendon on Monday.
He wasn't the only defensive lineman hurt against Houston. Domata Peko injured his knee on the opening series and didn't return.
"Antwan has done some things this year that no one's done", teammate Tank Johnson said Monday. He's a great player and a great asset to our defense. Antwan has a lot of natural ability. He can reach over five people and grab you with his long arms."
One player whose prognosis improved overnight was Seahawks linebacker Lofa Tatupu. Seahawks coach Jim Mora said Monday further tests on the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker's chest muscle indicated a partial tear rather than a complete one. He was injured while trying to tackle Arizona receiver Larry Fitzgerald during Seattle's 27-3 loss to the Cardinals.
If Monday's results from the MRI exam are accurate, Tatupu could be back after a few weeks of rehabilitation.
Hes just got overall body soreness, coach Brad Childress said Monday, as well you would imagine.
Pro Bowl cornerback Antoine Winfield sprained his right foot and rookie wide receiver Percy Harvin aggravated a left shoulder injury. Winfield was wearing a walking boot in the locker room Monday and Childress refused to rule him out, or in, for Sundays game against the Steelers.
Harvin aggravated the shoulder injury while returning a kickoff, and he left the Metrodome with his arm in a sling.
I couldnt put a percentage on it, Clifton said. Were just going to see how it feels on Wednesday, and if Im good to go, Ill go on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Packers also are likely to be without wide receiver and return specialist Jordy Nelson for two weeks with a sprained knee.
Coach Ken Whisenhunt said Monday that X-rays after the game showed no broken bones.
