AP - The Canadian Press, citing an unidentified source, reported two captains will choose players from either conference to make up the teams for the 2011 game in Carolina. The expectation is the sides will be determined during a live TV event at the start of All-Star weekend.

NHL vice president Brendan Shanahan developed the idea and discussed the change during the GM meetings on Tuesday, but was reluctant to talk about it with the media afterward.
I think this would be awesome.

hmmm...well I definitely don't think the fan vote is ever as reasonable as it should be, so I'm open to the idea. I do think that taking away voting from the fans takes a lot of the advertising and attention away from the game; however this televising the captains picking their teams might turn out to be a hell of a draw. The NHL is slowly but surely getting better with the television coverage. This past draft was the first NHL draft I have ever watched...and I watched it through the 3rd roudn.

^^I watched the whole thing. I was pissed when Burke didn't take Kabanov in the third round.

My only fear is a captain being biased towards his teammates and all of a sudden there are five players from one team playing in the All-Star game.

That would be sick having it like that. Imagine the NBA ASG team elections. lol That would be crazy.

But taking fan voting out of it might make a lot of people mad. But I personally think the fans just choose the popular players.

Get Chuck and C-Webb to be the captains lol. Or Kenny and Earnie or some of those guys. But they still might be biased.

Me to, I'm starting to think that some NBA players wouldn't just pick their teammates either. Because they all want to win, so they have to pick the best there is, or else they will lose. I'd love to see this happen.

Plus they'd make bank on the tv portion. They could try to get a ton of NBA players to show up, and when their captains call them, they throw on a East/West jersey and hop up by their captain.

Wouldn't it be something if they add guys like Avery, Carcillo etc.

haha that'd be great.

I have a feeling that Ovie will surround himself with playmakers because he's a sniper, and vice versa for crosby.

Assuming they are the captains.

I could see them doing something like Toews/Richards or Toews/Crsoby too. Just because they are known for leadership.

So you want Team Dirty Alex to lay out a bunch of Team Crybaby Crosbys?
lol the only thing funny about that is how David Backes wouldn't be involved in any way

Crosby might have to show Alex again, what exactly leadership is.

I respect that he "knows how to win" with an amazing surrounding cast, but leadership... meh idk. I don't see him as much of a leader type. Guys like Toews, Richards, Iginila, Chara, who can really get the spark in their team's ass when they are losing or when they are flat, those guys are the real leaders. IMO

I really like this idea. It sounds like a great concept and I wish the other leagues would do this as well. They probably wont, but at least the NHL is doing something about it because the fan vote has proved not to be the best option to have the best players involved. I hope as well the captains don't play biased to their teammates, but I don't think that will happen. That'd be the only real con I could see about this.

Um.. He makes everyone around him better. The point totals of guys on his line, they don't really lie. The guy is a complete athletic freak, too. He is a quiet leader, and in tough times, he makes big plays that can win you BIG games. I don't think I need to repeat what he did to the Americans in the biggest game of his life.. Do I? Guys like Gretzky if they had to put up with the <Censored> he does, cheap shots, late hits etc. Gretzky would have died probably on the ice.
