The NBA has informed teams that it is projecting a rise in the salary cap of nearly $5 million for next season, which could aid clubs such as Chicago and Houston in their attempts to steal free agent-to-be Carmelo Anthony from the New York Knicks, according to sources familiar with the forecasts.

Sources told ESPN.com that all 30 teams were informed this week via league memorandum that an increase in the cap from this season's $58.6 million to $63.2 million in 2014-15 -- thanks to increased revenues -- is now expected. A corresponding rise in the luxury-tax threshold from $71.7 million to $77 million is also projected, sources said.

I think of it the other way around actually. The cap may be going up by 7.7% next year, but it's going to go up around 15% over the next two seasons. At this point, I think this offseason will show who are the smarter teams and who aren't. The cap going up this season could actually hurt some teams, but if the GM does play it right, then the '15 offseason for that team could really work out.

Think about it, outside of LeBron and Melo, who only a few select teams have a chance to bring in anyways, who's out there? Greg Monroe, Gordon Hayward, Isaiah Thomas, Luol Deng, Pau Gasol, Lance Stephenson, Kyle Lowry, and Marcin Gortat. Do any of those guys get you REALLY excited? There are some guys on that list that are good players, but is there anyone on that list that you want to make the face of your franchise?

But look at '15. Marc Gasol, Tyson Chandler, Nikola Vucecic, DeAndre Jordan, Omer Asik, Roy Hibbert, Kawhi Leonard, Chandler Parsons, Jeff Green, Thaddeus Young, Wilson Chandler, Tobias Harris, and Jimmy Butler. And those are just the C's and SF's. You also have Paul Millsap, Rajon Rondo, Kemba Walker, Kyrie Irving, Tristan Thompson, Monta Ellis, Kenneth Faried, Klay Thompson, Brandon Knight, Khris Middleton, Ricky Rubio, Kevin Love, Iman Shumpert, Reggie Jackson, Markieff Morris, Gerald Green, LaMarcus Aldridge, Wesley Matthews, Marco Belinelli, Manu Ginobli, Tony Parker, Amir Johnson, and Alec Burks. Obviously some of those guys will get reupped, but the '15 free agency class seems that it will be very rich in talent.

And with the cap going up, you're going to have current contracts like Jrue Holiday that will go from good to great, and Ryan Anderson from great to whatever is better than great, to Tyreke Evans from going slightly overpaid to maybe slightly underpaid. No doubt in my mind that Gordon Hayward and Lance Stephenson will get more than any of those guys this offseason.

Maybe this whole "Lakers get everyone" thing isn't so crazy...

Nola a lot of the guys you named are restricted, to be fair and the cap going up could only increase the likelihood of deals being matched.

I know, I should have stated a lot of those guys may never truly hit the market, but I do feel like you're starting to see more teams be willing to trade those guys. For whatever reason.
