TORONTO — Toronto Raptors rookie big man Nathan Jawai is finally going to get his shot at the NBA.
Jawai, who has been sidelined since training camp, has been cleared to begin physical activity, the Raptors announced Wednesday.
The 22-year-old Aussie had been held out for precautionary reasons after an abnormality was detected during normal procedural pre-season cardiac screening.
"It's going to be a little bit of time before he's in any kind of shape to play, but at least we can start working with him and hopefully get him ready to help out some time in the new year," Raptors coach Jay Triano said.
Triano said it may take Jawai a month or more to get to the point where he can play.
"As far as the technical aspect of it and tactical aspects of the game, he's right there with everything that we're doing so I don't expect it will take him long," Triano said. "It's just going to be the actual movements and the physical conditioning, how sore he gets after not doing anything for as long as he has."
The club acquired the draft rights to Jawai from the Indiana Pacers on July 9 in the trade that brought Jermaine O'Neal to Toronto for a package centred around guard T.J. Ford.
Jawai, a six-foot-10, 285-pound forward, was the 41st overall selection in the 2008 NBA draft.
He is the first indigenous player from Australia to be drafted by an NBA team.
Yeah I know, no one cares lol
