Adam Silver is expected to take the NBA in a more innovative direction when he takes over for David Stern as commissioner on Feb. 1.

One idea that has been floated is a elimination tournament involving the four teams with the best record at the All-Star break.

The games wouldn't count in the regular season standings, but would create an entertainment boost to begin the second half.

The tournament would presumably take on a guise similar to special cups that club soccer teams play for during the season.

Surprised nobody posted this yet..

Sounds like an interesting idea until someone blows out a knee in a meaningless pick-up game.

These games will end up being the oop-fest, three point shootouts that the all-star game has become.

Yeah that is what I was going to say. It would basically be just 3 games that mimic the all-star game. Would probably be pretty neat at first, but I think most real fans would get bored of it.

Only way I could see this sticking would be having some sort of real implications to the outcomes.

If they did it like soccer, the winning team would get money. Substantial enough to warrant a legitimate competition.

I think they could work out the schedule enough to make it work.

Not a fan of meaningless midseason games

Am a fan of shortening the season and contracting teams but that wont happen

This wont work without there being some kind of stakes.

I have a better idea. Team challenges. Offer a duel to any team. Winning team takes player of choosing off losing team. HIGH STAKES

Just wait until the final dunk of the night to win it all when Ross pedals out on a Schwinn with a TMac throwback jersey on and dunks over the bicycle.

I think the dunk contest will forever suck. We've already seen it all.

the dunk contest needs a complete overhaul. the props ruined it.

this wouldn't be bad but no one would want to risk injury. im all for adding more to the weekend though. i think K they should do winner of the all-star game gets homecourt on the finals.

JaVale McGee was the breath of fresh air the dunk contest needed, and then the judges gave it Blake Griffin for bending his knees enough to get over the hood of a small car (something that NEVER should have been driven on a basketball floor, in the first place--they can't handle that weight). That was the least impressive dunk contest winner in recent memory.

Part of the reason the dunk contest sucks is that judges are biased toward certain players.

I already don't like the changes Silver is making. They're saying that Stern is sort of letting him make some minor changes before Stern's actually out. The flop fines and stuff have gone away, and it's like officials are just calling it a charge every time a defensive player hits the floor. I don't know what that would be besides Silver. I don't know if he's all for playing on the dramatization of basketball or what, but goddammit...he's gotta bring the flop fines and the focus on not calling flops back. Basketball was so good last year, and that was part of it. Now it's back to being as much a fucking Broadway act as a game.

This is a terrible idea. You don't make something more interesting by playing more meaningless games.

I hated Stern, but Silver seems like he's going to be worse :(.

why not? it will make the all-star game more competitive. the winning side will get home court in the finals. theyll play hard for that.
