For the first time in his major league career, Don Mattingly's team has a policy of no facial hair.

And as the Miami Marlins' new manager, he's the one enforcing the rule.

The Marlins allowed players to have beards the past two years, but that changed under an organizational policy adopted after Mattingly was hired.

Don't know how facial hair affects a player's game.

Don't really know why some MLB teams do this.

For equality?

Some think that the "corporate" image of the Yankees is more professional. Others think that it is not a big deal if players have beards and mustaches. I wear a beard and it doesn't affect much for me.

Well, he is a former Yankee and that's their M.O. so it's not overly surprising. It's to create a professional culture, after all, it is a business. I don't think it really affects anything though other than that it may upset certain stubborn players wanting the right to express themselves in that particular manner. They can get tf over it though, they get paid millions of dollars to play a game lol, if it means shaving off your scrubby bum looking beard it shouldn't be an issue. The benefit far far far outweighs the cost
