The Indianapolis Colts have lost Melvin Bullitt for the remainder of the season.

The veteran safety will undergo surgery in the next two weeks to repair a broken bone in his shoulder and be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list, according to Leonard Roth, his agent.

“Worst possible news,’’ Roth said in an email to The Star. “He will be operated on in the next two weeks to repair it and get ready to go next year.

“He has worked very hard and (is) heartbroken over this development.’’

Bullitt, who underwent surgery on his right shoulder in the offseason, suffered the latest injury in last Sunday’s loss at Jacksonville. It isn’t known if he injured the same shoulder.

Bullitt’s loss is the latest setback for the Colts’ defense. He was playing in place of Bob Sanders, who underwent surgery to repair a torn right biceps tendon. Sanders remains on the active roster, but isn’t likely to play until sometime in December at the earliest

The likely prospects to replace Bullitt are Brandon King, an undrafted rookie out of Purdue, and DaJuan Morgan.

Bullitt has emerged as a mainstay in the secondary while Sanders has battled a variety of injuries.

Since joining the team as an undrafted rookie out of Texas A&M, Bullitt has appeared in 48 regular-season games, 24 as a starter.

The Colts at 2-2 are also 0-2 in the AFC South for the first time since it began in 2002.

Wow, Sanders and Bullit down, the Colts defense is going to be hurting. Antoine Bethea needs to step up big time.
