According to WFAN's Mike Francesa, Mets ace Matt Harvey is headed to the disabled list with a partially torn ulnar collateral ligament. Such an injury, of course, often leads to Tommy John surgery. Marc Carig of Newsday originally reported that Harvey underwent an MRI on Monday morning.
Harvey, age 24, has pitched to a 2.27 ERA (159 ERA+), 0.931 WHIP and 6.16 K/BB ratio in this, his first full season at the major-league level. He was of course the NL starting pitcher for All-Star Game at Citi Field in July.
The Mets for some time have planned to shut down Harvey at around the 200-inning mark (he's presently at 178 1/3). Now, though, losing Harvey for merely the rest of 2013 is probably a best-case scenario.
As for the road ahead, here's this from CBSSports.com's Jon Heyman:

Somewhere GMF is crying in a corner.

Then again, Tommy John can be beneficial to one's career.

I HATE PITCH INNING LIMITS!!! fuck them!!!! GOddamnit!!

This is so retarded. Let's take a kid out of college with a bright future, let's limit his innings every year in the Minors, and then when he's our ace just expect him to go out there and throw 100 pitches or more every 5 days. Great fucking idea.

It's like if I started to go to the gym more often, and once I hit 225 on bench press I just stayed there for 6 months, and then decided suddenly I was going to try and lift 300 every day. Real fucking brilliant. All these guys who have innings limits and they still tear their elbow, why hasn't anybody realized the mistake?

At this point I just want to quit baseball. At least in football it's common for a player's career to end in injury after 3 years and you can let go easier.

They limit innings in the minors to avoid burning them out in the lower levels.

they shouldn't. it's clearly not working. you can't build up someone's workload by limiting them.

Pitchers are going to tear ligaments no matter what, keeping them on pitch limits does not cause it. The point is to not burn them out early.

pitch limits do cause it. this is why tommy john surgeries are going up every year. the more cautious you get the more danger you place them in for when they get to the majors and are expected to take on a heavier workload.

hey, I'm sure mechanical flaws play a bigger part, but I've never seen major league pitch or innings limits do shit to someone's longevity. Yeah, sooner or alter someone is going to tear a muscle, the whole point is to break down the muscle and let it repair itself to strengthen it. limiting a guy does not accomplish that. To quote something from ESPN even though I hate them but it makes sense:

But the emphasis on pitch counts and innings limits obscures a central fact: Pitchers are overpitched and undertrained. The reason everybody goes nutty when the White Sox allow Chris Sale to throw 115 pitches on May 28 and 119 on June 3 isn't because there's some magic number that portends weakness or injury or imminent surgery. Instead, it's because most professional pitchers aren't allowed to train their arms to throw 110-plus pitches in a game and be in a position to be strong five days later.

2015 will be the season for the Mets. They still have a bright future.
