All the worries and fretting from Devils fans about Martin Brodeur going to free agency turned out to be for no good reason.
Renaud Lavoie from RDS reports Brodeur has re-signed with New Jersey on a two-year deal worth $9 million. With an average annual value of $4.5 million, it’s a step down in his cap hit from his last deal that paid out at $5.2 million per.
At 40, this will almost certainly be Brodeur’s final contract in the NHL as he was surrounded by retirement talk before the Devils marched to the Stanley Cup finals. With the way Brodeur played through the second half of the season and playoffs, he looked more like the Marty of old that we’ve seen through the years, making highlight saves and ensuring Devils victories.
Now Brodeur rejoins a New Jersey team that has one really big question left to answer — whether or not they’ll re-sign Zach Parise. The Hall-of-Fame netminder sticking around for another couple seasons will surely help the Devils’ cause in keeping Parise around.
