A source tells Jim Reeves of ESPNDallas.com that the Rangers "keep coming back" to the possibility of trading for Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell.

The Rangers continue to look for a right-handed hitter to back up first base and third base, so Lowell couldn't be a better match on paper. Of course, they nearly traded for the veteran in December until the team raised questions about his injured thumb and surgically-repaired hip. Lowell is currently sidelined with a bum left knee, so the they will likely wait to see him back on the field before revisiting the possibility.

I loved the move for the Rangers 2 months ago and despite his health issues, I still like the move now. The Rangers are in serious need of a righty power stroke and Lowell continues to prove that when healthy, he can still consistently swing for the fences. With so much hype surrounding the Mariners' off-season and the misguided perception that the Angels won't be as good...now is the time for the Rangers to continue to capitalize on the AL West crown.

One way or the other, Mike Lowell doesn't finish the season on the Red Sox...unless he spends most of the season on the DL, preventing a trade.

Yeah I think he'll maybe start the year on the dl, possibly up to a month. But I agree with you in that I don't see him on the Red Sox the entire year, especially if it looks like the Rangers want to get this done.

Apparently the Rangers no longer have an interest in Lowell:

they claimed Garko off waivers, and this article at metsblog.com seems to suggest he would be, if proven healthy, a good 2010 fill-in at first base, although I don't see the Mets goin after him.
