Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford appeared to suffer an injury to his left (non-throwing) hand during the second quarter of Saturday night's 31-20 preseason loss to the Oakland Raiders.

Stafford, who was 8-of-10 passing for 68 yards before he left the game, was observed on the sideline with a heavy wrap on the injured hand. X-rays on the hand were negative, Tim Twentyman of the Lions' official website reported.

According to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News, trainers were looking at Stafford's hand while backup Shaun Hill began warming up. Lions coach Jim Schwartz later told WXYZ-TV that he believed Stafford was all right.

"He got his hand banged," Schwartz said, via Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. "We'll see. I think he's OK."

Stafford said after the game that his hand was fine and he would have continued if it was a regular-season game.

Stafford was hit by Raiders defensive end Dave Tollefson following an incomplete pass to Titus Young on a third-down play that led to a Ben Graham punt. Twentyman noted that Stafford appeared to whack his hand against a helmet. After an examination from the training staff, Stafford's hand was heavily wrapped on the sideline.

In addition to Stafford, Lions cornerbacks Dwight Bentley and Chris Houston both exited the game with injuries. Bentley suffered what was announced as a shoulder injury in the first quarter, while Houston injured his ankle.

Sounds like they just held Stafford out for precautionary reasons but the loss of Bentley and Houston is a concern, they are already shorthanded in the secondary and now this. Not sure yet what the extent is of the injuries to Bentley and Houston but the Lions need these guys.

Looks like the offense will just have to put up 50+ a game.

Yeah, Matt said he could have went back in if it were a regular season game. Hopefully Bentley and Houston aren't serious though.
