Following a review and hearing, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has determined that the Detroit Lions have violated the NFL anti-tampering policy by commenting publicly to the media about the Lions' desire to acquire players then under contract to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The Lions are also cited for impermissible contact with a player (or his agent) then under contract to the Chiefs.

The violations occurred in 2010 and center around Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham, who served as the Chiefs' coordinator from 1995-2000, and told the Detroit Free Press that he wouldn't mind signing players the Chiefs might end up releasing.

The Chiefs filed tampering charges against the Lions to initiate the proceeding.

Commissioner Goodell decided on the following disciplinary action to resolve the matter:

» The Lions will forfeit its seventh-round selection (acquired from the Denver Broncos) in the 2011 NFL Draft.

» The Chiefs and Lions will switch fifth-round selections in the 2011 Draft. As a result, the Chiefs now own the ninth selection and Detroit the 23rd selection in the fifth round.

» Either club may appeal the decision by advising Goodell in writing of its desire to do so by February 28.

I don't like losing any draft picks, 1-7. All are important in some way or another.

Just a seventh?

The chances of the player being impact may not be too big, but who knows. The Saints drafted Marques Colston in the 7th.

Why are people acting like its nothing? Theres been alot of productive 7th round picks the past 5-7 years. Also they now can't package that 7th to trade up. Regardless of what you think, teams value the 7th round pick highly.

Certainly puts us at a disposition, but can't really do much about it.

I'm more upset about the 5th pick swap then the 7th round loss.

No doubt losing the pick is tough. There are a lot of guys that can be productive that you can snag in the 7th. As that list of players shows. Since we don't have a 7th now, looks like we could maybe try and snag some undrafted player that could make an impact. Not the desired route but it can, and has panned out.

The whole reason why I put UDFA's is because teams like to take players who think they won't be able to sign in UDFA. Because the UDFA's get to pick what team they're on.
