Lions inform Nate Burleson hes being released today

The Lions have made the first big move of their offseason, one that leaves them shorter on offensive options and leadership.

According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions have informed wide receiver Nate Burleson that hes being released today.

The move clears $5.5 million worth of salary cap space.

The 32-year-old wideout was a consistent performer for the Lions when well, but missed 17 games the last two seasons because of injuries.

Its a hard decision for them to make, but I cant blame them for making it, Burleson said.

Burleson should find work in the NFL again soon. If not, theres always a second career in pizza delivery.

Wish they'd of just restructured. He's said he would've taken a paycut.
Just for his leadership qualities.

Crazy, ain't it? Dude finally played 16 and got cut.

Delmas and Quinn was a nice combo.

To me, this is why the Lions remain entrapped in mediocrity. First they hire one of the worst coaches in league history, a guy who only had a chance at coaching because of Tony Dungy, and then they go and make a move like this. Cutting Burleson made sense. Delmas? Not at all.

The cap hit was too high to keep him. I'll miss him though.

I dunno. He wasn't making THAT much money, was he? Granted, the problems in Detroit aren't really all that obvious. I personally think your FO should at least be throwing around the idea of another QB for competition. There needs to be some progression from Stafford, next year.

I think his cap hit was around 7 million. He played solid last year, but he wasn't worth that kind of money. I will miss him though.

As for Stafford, I think the whole situation with him is overblown. He was on fire the first half of the year. And really only played with Calvin and Reggie to throw to all season, especially the second half. The WRs we had on the team aside from Calvin last season probably would not make a single roster in the NFL. Durham is terrible. Our next best option was Kevin fucking Ogletree. Give Stafford a few more options to throw to and he will be just fine. The problem was he tried to do too much with the little amount of talent he had to throw to. He's still young and has only 3 full seasons under his belt. He obviously has some room for improvement, but the guys who are trying to run him out of town are ridiculous really.

Well obviously you continue with the experiment, but you gotta treat him like he's replaceable or he may never improve.
