Lewis, Ochocinco trade verbal barbs
Posted by Mike Florio on December 22, 2010, 5:02 PM EST
Last week, the Bengals considered deactivating receiver Terrell Owens for the balance of the season. This week, receiver Chad Ochocinco could be on the verge of being left on the shelf.
Ochocinco and coach Marvin Lewis exchanged words on Wednesday. Though they haven't squared off face to face (yet), each man has made his point.
It started when Lewis described Ochocinco as "mopey" during a conference call with the San Diego media. And Lewis hinted that Chad's attitude could indeed get him benched.
"[H]e's being his mopey self," Lewis said, via James Walker of ESPN.com. "Hopefully, he can pull himself out of it and move forward. . . . When things don't go Chad's way, that's kinda how it happens. . . . We'll put a new guy in there. If he's not ready to go Sunday, we'll have somebody in there ready to go and go from there."
Ochocinco didn't like it.
"Since when the f–k am I ever mopey?" Ochocinco said on Twitter, sans dashes. "I'm injured for the 1st time in 9 years and it's called being mopey, unless I'm dead then I get respect."
Chad, the coach is right. You are mopey. When things are going well, you're all smiles and lollipops. When things go poorly, you mope. You sulk. You pout.
The problem is that Lewis previously has tolerated Ochocinco's antics. Five years ago, for example, when Ochocino (who was known as Chad Johnson at the time) disrupted the Cincinnati locker room by throwing punches and/or giving out headlocks because he wasn't getting the ball in a playoff game that the Bengals were leading, Lewis had Chad's back, denying the incident with the same zeal that Lewis denied the report that he considered omitting T.O. from the game-day roster in the final weeks of the season.
The fact that Lewis is speaking out now confirms what everyone realizes — Lewis isn't long for Cincinnati, and as the finish line approaches his ability to put up with guys like T.O. and Ochocinco is starting to show some serious cracks.
