Leading rusher Ivory goes on IR; Saints re-sign Wynn

The New Orleans Saints placed rookie running back Chris Ivory, the team's leading rusher, on injured reserve and re-signed running back DeShawn Wynn.

Ivory sustained an injury to his left foot during Sunday's loss to the Tamp Bay Buccaneers. The undrafted free agent rushed for 716 yards and five touchdowns in 12 games.

Wynn returned to the Saints after first signing with them as a free agent in August. He played on special teams in four games, and then was waived in October. Wynn then signed with the San Francisco 49ers, played on special teams in three games and then was waived in December.

Running back depth has been a problem for the Saints all season. Reggie Bush is healthy after missing more than half of the season due to abroken leg, but Pierre Thomas

Pierre Thomas is on IR now also. The Saints RB luck has been terrible this year. Let me break it down:

Lynell Hamilton- third string- IR before season

PJ Hill- fourth string- IR before season

Ladell Betts- was in TC with the Saints but released, after injuries to Bush and Thomas he is brought back. Now on IR.

Chris Ivory- made the roster with the Hamilton and Hill injuries, but has only played in three full games this season. Has either not played or been injured in the others. IR.

Pierre Thomas- starter- has missed 10 games this season, sent to IR today.

Reggie Bush- starter- has missed 8 games this season.

Saints running backs have missed a total of 62 games this season.

Definitely hurting at the RB position, but they love passing anyways so it doesn't affect them too much, but when they're trying to establish balance then it kills. Being balanced, setting up the play action really helps out the passing game. Tough luck for the Saints RB's this year, we'll see what happens come playoff time.

Its not like these are phenomenal runningbacks that the Saints are missing out on here. Just look at what guys like Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory were before they even came to New Orleans. The Saints passing game is so potent that defenses literally line up 10 yards away from the ball, just to get a head start on Brees' receivers. If the Saints couldn't pass the ball as well as they do, Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory wouldn't be on the roster anyways.

Julius Jones will do a fine job in the playoffs. He's not as much of a bruiser but he can catch balls out of the backfield and he's fresh, following a career in Seattle where he did next to nothing. The Saints get to the Super Bowl b/c of airing it out, not the ground game. Even when team's know they have to pass, they cannot be stopped.

The passing game definitely is what carries the team, it's all on Brees. If he's off, they don't last a chance, if he's on, it don't matter if all your RB's are hurt, you'll get burned anyway.

You're going off of what you hear, and not what is actually the case... Pierre Thomas is a helluva runner, and what helps him just as much as the passing game is the OFFENSIVE LINE. The Saints have the best guard duo in the league, and PT feasts on carries up the middle for 4-6 yards. Last year, the Saints were one of the most dynamic running teams in the league - this year they fell victim to some unfortunate injuries.

My point is that the Saints' passing game is so good, it opens up the ground game, big time. It doesn't take a great runningback to produce in that offense...not when the defense is playing the pass all game long. I've watched the Saints control a game b/c of the run but its always easier when Brees to Colston or Brees to Henderson just burned you for 60 yards on the last 2 possessions. Pierre Thomas is gash in New Orleans but he wouldn't do jack shit on most other teams. The guy was a nobody before New Orleans and going back to the beginning of the season, there was talk that he might be cut b/c he was in terrible shape.

Again, I don't know what Saints' fans are looking for sympathy for. Pierre Thomas, Chris Ivory, PJ Hill, Lynell Hamilton, and Ladell Betts, all on IR...and...? Watch Deshawn Wynn step in and suddenly look like a stud.

The Saints depend on guys like Ivory, Thomas, and Bush. First off, the rushing game obviously. The Saints were 6th overall rushing offense last year, but we never got a chance to establish that this year because of the injuries we have suffered. Then there is outlet passes that Drew throws to Pierre and Reggie when he has to get rid of the ball because of pressure. Then most importantly, the pass rush pickup PT and Reggie provide. They are both really underrated in pass blocking, and they play a big part of that.

I'm not telling you the ground attack isn't important...I'm saying that its too easy for the Saints to run the ball and their scheme is what allows for players like PT and Ivory to look a lot better than they really are. Is it any wonder why nobody knew who the fuck Chris Ivory was before he was signed by the Saints? No.

Neither Bush or Thomas are these great blitz picker-uppers that nobody recognizes. They stand back and then get in the way during max protect situations, when a LB shoots the gap. Sometimes they do just enough, sometimes they stuff it, sometimes they whiff. I'd say Thomas is average...Bush...don't remember the last time I saw him block.

When Reggie first came into the league he'd always be coming out of the backfield and looking for the pass. Now he probably stays in the backfield and helps the protection more than he comes out.

This may be true, (I wouldn't remember the last time he was actually on the field), but even if it is...intentions don't always measure up to ability.

I always wonder how long the player is out for, this late in the season. It could be just a couple weeks, a month, or awhile. It just seems like the IR makes it sound more serious then it is. Not that it's not, just gives off that vibe. Ivory was a nice spark plug for New Orleans, especially with Reggie and Pierre out. He probably wont ever be a true #1 back but it's nice to see him do well. Saints should be fine. Maybe someone else will pull an Ivory and do work for them in the playoffs.

They'll definitely be fine in the first round, the Seahawks don't stand a chance. It will be a lot tougher for New Orleans the week after, I just don't think they are as good this year, they are beatable, as is any team.

Take it from me, I'll be brutally honest if I need to be. Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas are very good at picking up blitzes. Guys like Ivory and Jones? They couldn't pick it up if it was my grandmaw coming through the hole.

The Saints are 10 point dogs in this game. This has got to be the line of the year.
