Ilya Kovalchuk is retiring from the NHL.
"This is something I have thought about for a long time going back to the lockout and spending the year in Russia," Kovalchuk said in a statement. "Though I decided to return this past season, Lou was aware of my desire to go back home and have my family there with me. The most difficult thing for me is to leave the New Jersey Devils, a great organization that I have a lot of respect for, and our fans that have been great to me." Kovalchuk is only 30 and had only played in three seasons of his 15-year, $100 million contract with the New Jersey Devils. This is a huge blow to the Devils as it removes arguably their most effective offensive weapon from the equation.

Pathetic honestly for the Devils; Sign a guy to 15 years and he plays 3 before retiring at age 30.

According to a few numbers online, the Devils have to pay him $1.6 million every year for 24 years.

LOL HARD.

1) Kovalchuk is a dick
2) Devils are fucked
3) Don't ever sign a contract like that again.

Oh right, and they can't even pay their employees because of all debt.

HA! That's just hilarious

You never want to lose a sniper like Kovalchuk, but this helps the Devils more than it hurts.

They aren't paying him anything. Contract is void. They get a $250k (or so) cap hit for the duration of the contract. They're in debt as it is and this has rid them of a huge contract. They weren't even competing this year anyway so who cares about short-term. Get the ownership settled and then use the cap room you've now given yourself to replace him.

^Very true. Only thing that blows is they lose their first rounder in 2014.

No Ho Sang or Ekblad in New Jersey.

True, but they fucked up on that. Could have given it up when it was 29.

Don't know what Lou was smoking. Did he expect to win the cup this year?

Not bad then, I was wondering why I couldn't find anything on a contract void.

Very disappointing to see a top goal scorer go out of the league though. Except I hate the Devils so I don't care.
