The Knicks are close to adding Mike Woodson to their coaching staff as their defensive assistant.

The move could be formalized by next week, according to sources.

Woodson was recommended by Isiah Thomas, who is a long-time friend and has consulted Jim Dolan since leaving his position as president.

I like the move for NY. Woodson will likely help that squad out a lot defensively.

D'Antoni knows its make or break this year, which is the only reason I think he agreed. Cause this is the same damn reason he left PHX lol

Anxious to see how we do...

Good hire if it gets complete. This team has good scoring they just need defense and this could help.

Woodson would be a good pickup for the Knicks. He may not contribute more than just a focus on defense, but at least he'd be able to do that. The one thing I'd be concerned about for New York is whether or not he earns the players' respect. I know that he definitely didn't earn that in Atlanta.

tbh I dont believe Dantoni has his own players respect I think its a done deal he's gone after this year unless we make a deep playoff run.

This is a good signing especially considering since Dantoni wont be back after this year. You can just see it on the team and in the organization. We really need to play better defense and it all starts with a defensive minded coach.

It's a good move if D'Antoni actually looks towards his assistants this year. That's the big problem. He may have assistants there but when it comes to the game, it's his call. If he can change that philosophy, this will be a great hire.

I don't understand the Woodson hiring then, because I'm pretty sure the Hawks didn't respect him.

Thats the Hawks though these are different players, different ego's. I dont think just because he wasnt respected in ATL means it will carry over to NY. At least I hope not.

tbh I think the players will be more open to Woodson then D'Antoni. And he'll ultimately end up taking over the HC job..

The New York Knicks announced today that Mike Woodson has joined Head Coach Mike D’Antoni’s staff as an assistant coach. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“I was extremely encouraged after meeting with Mike that he would be a great addition to our coaching staff and we are pleased to welcome him back to New York,” D’Antoni said. “Mike brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to our team and we are confident that he will help us as we continue towards our goal of building a championship team.”

Woodson joins the Knicks after serving as the head coach of the Atlanta Hawks for six seasons from 2004-2010, where he guided the Hawks to the playoffs in each of his last three seasons. In six seasons in Atlanta, Woodson amassed a 209-286 (.419) coaching record in 492 games while posting an 11-18 record in 29 playoff games. Prior to joining the Hawks, Woodson served as an assistant coach with the Milwaukee Bucks (1996-99), Cleveland Cavaliers (1999-2001), Philadelphia 76ers (2001-03) and the 2003-04 NBA Champion Detroit Pistons.

“I consider Mike D’Antoni to be one of the top coaches in our game and I am thankful for this opportunity,” Woodson said. “I’m excited to re-join this great franchise where my professional career started and will work to build off of the success they had here last season."
It's official. Hopefully Woodson can help our defense get better. Our offense is good it's that our defense was terrible last year.

Amar'e Stoudemire is excited about the addition of Mike Woodson to the Knicks' coaching staff.

"I think it's great," Stoudemire said Wednesday. "It's definitely what we talked about, improving defensively. With the help of Mike (Woodson) it's going to be really positive for us. But it's up to us as players to take that commitment and implement it."

The front office wanted Mike D'Antoni to hire a defensive coach following their four-game sweep in the playoffs at the hands of the Celtics.

"For us to win a championship, defense has to be a primary force," Stoudemire added. "It has to be something that we focus in on. Everyone has to buy into it and everyone has to become much better."
Im sure he's mainly taking about Melo lol
