The name emerges from the court and it rings in your head day in and day out. He is known for his leadership, aggression and teamwork, and his work ethic. This great player brings nothing more to the table than 110% effort, and that is shown in his ability to achieve over 80 triple doubles in his career, which remains open to numerous years. And with such amazing talent at the helm of the New Jersey Nets, their offers to send him elsewhere remain on the table. Now at the age of 34, Kidd once again lands the spotlight around the NBA world in trade negotiations with the Dallas Mavericks, and even mention by LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Plain and simple, it's time for the New Jersey Nets and Kidd "all to move on" in separate directions, and with that the Nets have been understanding to the devoted veteran's requests. Negotiations remain on the table with Dallas, a team willing to bring back the player they drafted in 1994, for a deal that would also include the Portland Trail Blazers. And now, most league executives are getting a stronger feeling that the deal can get done soon and that Dallas will acquire his bags packing out west. Although trade talks cooled down earlier this week about a trade that most experts say would include Mavericks guard Devin Harris, Mavericks forward Brandon Bass, Jerry Stackhouse, and Portland prospects Travis Outlaw, Channing Frye, and Jarrett Jack. Although talks fell silent Wednesday night, a few sources monitoring the situation insist that the talks are all but dead given the February 21st deadline, and mention that the talks could heat up to Tuesday's remarkable level.
To get this deal done, both teams want the three prospects mentioned but Blazers GM Kevin Pritchard says "we're not making any trades to break up a team of youngsters. And who would give up this team that has rebounded from the season-ending surprise injury of #1 Overall Draft pick Greg Oden. Some sources have mentioned that Portland is shopping Jack himself, but the idea of throwing three or four prominent prospects into a deal is unlikely and bizarre at most.
Kidd has made it clear now that a return to Dallas to play alongside Dirk Nowitzki is his preferred choice, but also has acknowledged the possibility of LeBron James' requests for the Cavaliers to offer New Jersey a deal to bring Kidd to the defending Eastern Champions, a move almost necessary following the recent loss of Center-Forward Anderson Varejao who is expected to miss up to 3-4 weeks due to a high ankle sprain. The Dallas Mavericks have also acknowledged the impossibility of acquiring Kidd without the parting of Harris, a 24 year old point guard having by far his best season yet.
The Mavericks are now desperate for a deal to propel them into the NBA Finals following a 67 win season last year followed quickly by a knockout by Golden State in the first round. Don't expect much out of Portland. They seem to be confident with their top prospects in Jack, Outlaw and Frye. Frye and Outlaw are both very athletic prospects with salary-cap friendly contracts. It's certain now that a deal is to either happen now or never, as a deal waited out for a few days without fiery negotiations will quickly burn out. As most fans know, New Jersey is known for shopping Kidd, using last year's deadline as an example when Kidd was nearly dealt to Los Angeles to play with the Lakers. Kidd would make an exceptional acquisition for either team, especially Portland to give veteran leadership to their young roster, but if a deal were to go through it is likely that Dallas has the upper hand on acquiring the 84 time triple doubler and that Portland is only an asset in getting Kidd to Dallas. 84 triple doubles proves that Kidd can single-handedly control a team in the palm of his hands along with his 9 assists per game and 14 points per game throughout the course of his entire career up to this date.
