Boston's Kevin Garnett won the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year Award on Tuesday. He beat out Denver's Marcus Camby and Houston's Shane Battier.

The 6-foot-11 forward led the Celtics with 9.2 rebounds per game. He added 18.8 points, 1.2 blocks and 1.4 steals.

Garnett helped the Celtics to league-best records of 66-16 (.805) overall and 31-10 (.738) on the road. Boston held opponents to just 90.3 points (second in the NBA) after allowing 99.2 points per game a season ago. The Celtics had the biggest one-year turnaround in NBA history.

Garnett received 493 points, including 90 first-place votes. Camby, who won the award last season, finished second with 178 points and Battier had 175 points.

mehh- i was not even puttin him into contention to be honest -- figured Camby would get it, or even Kobe

I didn't really think about him in the top 5 , but he did lead the best defensive team so why not.

Camby > KG

But whatever, this is the NBA, where the golden boys always win <_<

Statistic wise Camby should of won it, but KG did turn the Celtics into the best defensive team in the league. I would of been fine with either one of them winning it, b/c I like Camby, too.

IMO, Josh Smith deserved it because he played all-around defense, but, I guess DPOY is not the statistics but your impact on the defense. And, KG definitely made the Celtics Defense what it is.

KG defintely deserved it.
The Celitics gave up 100 ppg last year to their opponents, and only 90 this year
that doesnt happen on accident.

But it makes you wonder. How come KG gets DPOY for being the anchor of the C's defense, but Duncan has never won it for being the anchor of the Spurs defense for about the last decade?
hmmmmmmmm.

btw, Camby's a great defender, but you guys are overrating him a tad.
all he does is block guards coming from the weak side

Defense isn't only about blocks...or even steals. Its about getting stops...forcing them to miss....etc.

I didn't mean it that way...

I know Battier is a great defender, ala Bruce Bowen...

I was just surprised that he was 30th in blocks - I never pictured him as being a big shot blocker.

Camby got it last year, so the statement about golden boys isn't exactly true. Actually, recently, the Defensive award hasn't really gone to many big stars. Mutombo isn't a big star, I don't consider Ben Wallace a "golden boy", and no one really likes Ron Artest.

Anyway, to comment on KG's award, I think he deserves it. Congrats to him.
