It sounds like Josh McDaniels will be part of another Patriots playoff run.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that the Patriots are expected to hire McDaniels as an offensive assistant immediately. He will reportedly assist the team during their playoff run.

Bill O’Brien, who took the job to be the head coach at Penn State, remains on staff as an offensive coordinator. But McDaniels will provide another set of hands for the playoff run and is ultimately expected to replace O’Brien as coordinator.

McDaniels faced a lot of the AFC playoff competition this year while working for the Rams, including the Steelers, Ravens, and Bengals.

There was a lot of speculation that McDaniels could join Romeo Crennel in Kansas City, but the Chiefs were never known to have requested permission to speak with him. Perhaps they knew of his desire to return to the Patriots.

Does anyone find this kind of weird? Just casually adding a new coach (also the guy that drafted Tebow, though I know this had nothing to do with the decision but it is still interesting) during the playoffs like this?

IMO, NFL should have said "Josh McDaniels, you can start the day after the Patriots season ends."

they should have, I agree.

But if their offensive coordinators are allowed to be hired as HCs when the seasons going on, they should be able to hire coaches too.

And JMD was signed as a coaches' assistant. BB has numerous no-name assistants. It just happens to be that everyone knows JMD will be the offensive coordinator.

I don't think he's going to make that much of a difference. Team has had a bunch of OC changes over the last 10 years and the offense is still top notch regardless of who's making the calls.

Smart move. It's someone they are all familiar with.
