Josh Gordon Reportedly Issued Speeding Ticket, Marijuana Found on Passenger

Josh Gordon's offseason hit another snag when the Cleveland Browns wide receiver was caught speeding in Strongsville, Ohio, over Memorial Day weekend, per Matthew Florjancic of WKYC in Cleveland:

According to the citation, Gordon's 2014 grey Mercedes-Benz SUV was clocked going 74 miles an hour in a 60-mile-per-hour zone north of state route 82 on Interstate 71 North at 9:43 p.m. on Sunday, May 25.
Gordon is summoned to appear in court on Wednesday, June 4 to dispute the citation.
In addition to his speeding ticket, Gordon's passenger was issued a citation for possession of marijuana in an amount under 200 grams during the traffic stop. The marijuana was found in a blue bag with identification, and Gordon's passenger admitted it was theirs on the scene.
Browns general manager Ray Farmer said the team will make an official statement about Gordon when it has more information, per Tom Withers of The Associated Press:

#Browns GM Farmer: "We are gathering information regarding the situation. We will not have any further comment until the appropriate time."

By itself, the speeding ticket is a rather innocuous offense, though the passenger being cited for marijuana possession will concern some. The bigger problem is that it follows Gordon's failed drug test, which was his second violation of the NFL's drug policy. As a result, the Browns star could be suspended for the entire 2014 season.

CBSSports.com's Dane Brugler wondered if Gordon will ever stop being dogged by his off-field indiscretions:
Aaron Nagler of Bleacher Report hit upon the often contradictory reactions from fans and the members of the NFL between when players mess up and owners mess up:

Yet another reason why the #Browns tried to trade WR Josh Gordon a year ago. He simply doesn't get it and maybe never will

I'm sure we're all talking about how Josh Gordon clearly has a problem and we all hope he gets the help he needs. Or is that only for owners

Former NFL veteran Dustin Fox took a more hard-line approach:

If I had a job that said hamburgers were against the rules... You know what I would do? Stay away from Hamburgers!! #Gordon

We all have beliefs on whether weed should be legal or not... Doesn't matter. NFL says no so that's all that matters. #Gordon

In terms of Gordon's playing career, this most recent news casts even more doubt on his future with the Browns.
He finished the 2013 season with 87 receptions for 1,646 and nine touchdowns and emerged as one of the best wideouts in the league.

Despite being in the middle of a career year, Cleveland reportedly weighed trade offers for him back in October. While the team may still want to offload him, that will become even harder to do with Gordon's off-field issues.

I'm starting to wonder if anyone even bothers with him.

As bad as I wanted him, glad as fuck we didn't trade for him.

I mean, you don't trade for a guy that likely won't even play a down for you, but based on pure talent alone, he's worth a 1st+

For someone who has ripped on him and complained about whats going on, this is a non-story to me. I've had passengers in my car with marijuana, had no idea and sometimes I did, but didn't care.

Although lately I don't care as much. Josh Gordon is dumb, but nation and state laws against marijuana are even dumber, and the NFL including it in the banned substance list is even dumber than both. Sucks that it's happening to my favorite team's best player, but the only way to get rid of stupid laws and rules is to break them and hopefully get a reaction showcasing the stupidity of such laws. Hasn't been the case, as the story is more about Gordon not learning his lesson. Guarantee if it was a white player with a spotless record and generally well perceived in the media, the story would suddenly become how the marijuana classification is dumb.
