I didn’t tune in to the Mets-Marlins game because, really, I didn’t care a lot about the Mets-Marlins game. But Bob Klapisch was there and he heard the boo-birds for returning star, Jose Reyes. And he wasn’t happy about it:

Let’s not quibble over what percentage of the Citi Field crowd booed Jose Reyes in his first at-bat Tuesday night. We’ll be kind and say only half declared war on the shortstop, even though it probably was more. But no matter – after the third inning, Reyes was treated to an ugly, full-blown trashing, which should’ve embarrassed any decent, fair-minded Mets fan.

I think Klapisch is right on all of the reasoning here: the Mets didn’t make any serious attempt to keep Reyes. The Marlins offered him silly money. Reyes did nothing on his way out the door that should have upset Mets fans. It was a straight business thing, just like anything else.

I’ve made no secret of the fact that I’m not a big fan of booing people, so I’m not totally objective here. And I realize that everyone has a right to boo if they want to. But booing Reyes last night seems rather odd, petty and kind of sad to me.

i actually know some people who went to that game. From what they told me and the people they talked to around them, the boos when Reyes stepped up to the plate were directed at Ownership, especially since they put more effort into a tribute video than trying to resign the guy.

A rebuilding team shouldn't be giving out 100 million dollar contracts, so why exactly is the ownership at fault here?

The GM should be blasted for not trading him last year.

Mets fans are stupid for booing Reyes. Its not Reyes fault that he didnt get a legitimate offer from Mets management. He was a very good player for the team and he went to a team that actually wanted him, cant fault him for that.

I was confused by the boos, but at first it seemed that they didn't care either way. He got up there, and there was a delay like everyone was decided how to react, and most chose to boo. He should have been traded during the season last year.

I agree. He should have been traded, but there's not a doubt in my mind ownership told Alderson they planned to resign him, so he didn't trade him. At the time, they were deep into negotiations to sell about 33 percent of the team which would have easily covered the cost Reyes' contract. Those talks officially fell through in August, and now he's in Miami.

But regardless, Mets fans hate the Wilpons. They blame the Wilpons for everything. Quite frankly, most of my fellow Mets fans are brain dead, so that's why they hold ownership at fault.
