Free-agent point guard J.J. Barea said he believes he will be following Tyson Chandler and Caron Butler out of Dallas.

"It's not looking good here in Dallas, I don't think," Barea said Tuesday night. "I'm disappointed. I wasn't expecting this. Hopefully, it gets better."

The defending champion Dallas Mavericks appear to be sticking to a plan that will get the franchise below the salary cap next summer for the first time in the Mark Cuban era.

The goal is to create enough cap space to aggressively pursue one of the top three potential free agents, All-Star point guards Deron Williams and Chris Paul, and three-time defending defensive player of the year, center Dwight Howard.

The Golden State Warriors had their first direct contact with Tyson Chandler on Tuesday, according to sources with knowledge of the discussions.

The Warriors, sources said, have made Chandler their No. 1 roster target -- no matter what happens with their recent trade talks with the New Orleans Hornets about Chris Paul --- and join the Houston Rockets on the list of teams to directly engage Chandler in the past 48 hours.

The New Jersey Nets are also expected to talk with Chandler this week.

Sources say negotiations between the Mavericks and Chandler are essentially frozen, with Dallas determined to maintain as much payroll flexibility as possible for the summer of 2012, even if it means losing the defensive lynchpin of the first championship team in franchise history.

I can understand them trying to get under CAP, but they should still try to bring these guys back. Amnesty someone with a huge contract...like Haywood.

This sounds like the new cap system doing what it was meant to do. They are already about 6M over the cap without resigning any of those three guys. Resigning those guys could put them 20M over the cap and their cap penalties would be outrageous. If the Mavs got over that 20M Mark Cuban would owe the NBA 65M in cap penalties, and since he would be a repeat offender that number would jump to 85M. Seems like Cuban gets it to me.

Yeah, but sucks for the Mavs...no way they repeat without JJB or Chandler.

They will probably only have the MLE/LLE to offer.

Damn it sucks that the Mavericks wont have a legitimate shot at repeating. What has the league come to these days, lol. If Tyson is smart he would go to a team like the Clippers or Heat. Chandler is much more valuable than what he brings on the court. He changed the culture and attitude of that Mavericks team last year.

We should also not underestimate the value of JJ Barea of the bench. He was great for the Mavericks and brings a huge spark off the bench and can definitely help a contender like the Lakers who have a shitty bench.
