COLES GETS CUT

The Jets have parted ways with receiver Laveranues Coles, for the second time in his career.
Six years ago, the end came (temporarily) when Coles jumped to the Redskins as a restricted free agent. This time around, the Jets cut Coles loose despite owing him a guaranteed base salary of $6 million in 2009.
According to Dave Hutchinson of the Newark Star-Ledger, Coles wanted a long-term deal. The Jets opted instead to give him a chance to find one elsewhere. If he doesn’t Coles could return.
“We didn’t leave on bad terms,” Coles told Hutchinson. ”It’s not out of the question that I could come back.”
Coles didn’t get a new deal apparently because new coach Rex Ryan has adoped a policy of not giving veterans who are in their second contracts a new deal before the agreement has expired.
Still, it seems odd that the Jets would merely let Coles walk, when they owe him $6 million regardless of whether he’s on the team. The move results in no cap savings, and it forces the Jets to pay someone else (Marvin Harrison?) to replace Coles.
Perhaps the team decided that it wasn’t worth having Coles complain about his situation. While former coach Eric Mangini had no qualms about engaging players in a test of wills, it looks like Ryan won’t tolerate potential distractions — even if it means periodically creating the impression that the player got his “way.”
Despite the possibility that Coles will be back in New York, we also think he’ll try to reunite with his pal Chad Pennington, who was dumped by the Jets last summer as part of the Brett Favre fustercluck experiment.
