Wow.Free agent shortstop Derek Jeter is reportedly asking the New York Yankees for a new six-year, $150 million deal, which would be significantly longer and more valuable than the three-year, $45 million package that he has been offered by Yankees GM Brian Cashman.
Jeter, 36, is coming off a 10-year, $189 million contract as captain of the Yankees. A deal worth $25 million per year would put him on par with the salary of Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.
Cashman indicated to Jeter last week that the career Yankee was welcome to test the market if he believed he could do better than the three-year deal being offered by New York.
Jeter won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1996 and has been the Yankees' regular shortstop ever since. His 2010 batting average of .270 paled compared to his career .314 mark, while his on-base and slugging percentages were among the lowest of his career.
