Free agent shortstop Derek Jeter is reportedly asking the New York Yankees for a new six-year, $150 million deal, which would be significantly longer and more valuable than the three-year, $45 million package that he has been offered by Yankees GM Brian Cashman.

Jeter, 36, is coming off a 10-year, $189 million contract as captain of the Yankees. A deal worth $25 million per year would put him on par with the salary of Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez.

Cashman indicated to Jeter last week that the career Yankee was welcome to test the market if he believed he could do better than the three-year deal being offered by New York.

Jeter won the American League Rookie of the Year award in 1996 and has been the Yankees' regular shortstop ever since. His 2010 batting average of .270 paled compared to his career .314 mark, while his on-base and slugging percentages were among the lowest of his career.
Wow.

He's gonna go crawling back to the Yanks when no one wants to pay him that much...

3:24pm: Close tells Yahoo's Tim Brown that the Daily News report is off base (Twitter link). "The recently rumored terms of our contract extension are simply inaccurate," Close said.

10:12am: Jeter is asking for less than $150MM over six years, according to Jim Baumbach of Newsday (on Twitter).

Doesn't matter what the supposed price he's asking for, or any of that. When it's all said and done. He's playing for the Yankees.

This is just speculation, the article could be wrong and your source could be wrong too. I'm sure the Yankees wouldn't offer him that much anyway but if Jeter was really asking for that, his loyalty goes down the drain.

20M a year is absurd

but blame this on ARod
he sees Arod getting over 30M, and is saying he hasnt even done anything for the yankees. 1 post season he got hot out of how many? how often have i been clutch in the postseason? im mr. yankee. they offered him 15M, thats 2x less than Arod. he's saying, ARod is not worth twice as much as I am

i really dont blame him for wanting so much
