Brandon Jennings has a critical point to prove.
He's heard the whispers that a high-scoring but smallish backcourt tandem - Jennings and Monta Ellis - can only lead the Milwaukee Bucks to ruin.
And he begs to differ.
"I really want it to work just personally, because everybody is doubting it," Jennings said in an interview at his youth basketball camp at Homestead High School on Sunday.
"With everybody doubting it, I think it's important that me and him, we just work together to show everybody it can work.
"Everybody knows we both can score like crazy. But I think everybody thinks we can't win together. That's going to be one of our biggest challenges. I'm up for it and I know he is."
Jennings and Ellis had limited time to prove they could flourish together last season, after the 6-foot-3 Ellis was acquired in the March 14 trade that sent center Andrew Bogut to the Golden State Warriors.
The immediate payoff of a playoff berth was not realized as the Bucks faded in the final weeks and could not catch the New York Knicks or Philadelphia 76ers.
But there were some encouraging signs, including a 12-9 record with Ellis and Jennings in the same starting lineup. Ellis averaged 17.6 points, 5.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds in 21 games after joining the Bucks.
"We actually went through stretches where it could (work), but with the lockout and short season, we only got him with about a month left," Jennings said. "Now you've got to deal with me and Monta for a full 82 games; it should be interesting."
The Bucks still may be looking for a shooting guard with size to provide backcourt depth.
But Jennings said he already likes the wing options presented by veterans Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, Mike Dunleavy and second-year player Tobias Harris.
