All indications are Nelson will decline that option and test free agency in order to avoid being traded as an expiring contract.
Jameer Nelson can, and likely will, opt-out of the final year of his contract. Sources close to the situation say that Nelson wants to test free agency and sign a long-term deal that gives him some security going forward. Nelson doesn't want to be dealt as an expiring contract and end up in a bad situation. If he leaves Orlando, he wants to choose his next team rather than being dealt somewhere out of his control.

is his contract up for opting now? thatd be cool. better for him, worse for orlando. makes them need to make a move. i just dont see a team that needs a starting point guard right now so he may get locked in a mid-term/backup role.

There's plenty of teams that could use a starting PG:

- Chicago (until Rose comes back)
- Dallas
- Golden State (wouldn't be surprised if they moved Curry over to SG)
- LA Lakers
- Miami
- Minnesota (until Rubio comes back)
- Brooklyn (if Deron leaves)
- Phoenix (if Nash leaves)
- Portland
- Toronto (Jose Calderon is expiring and also being shopped)
- Utah

I'd rather have Chalmers than give Nelson a long-term deal.

Tbh, I'd rather have Rio.

Chalmers is the better defender, and is probably just as good of a 3PT shooter.
And since LBJ and DWade run iso all the time, the difference in passing isn't so glaring of a difference

So I agree with BC

I'm not sure if he's really a starter, fringe starter maybe?

Jameer Nelson will have until June 29 to decide whether to opt out of the final year of his contract with the Magic.

Nelson would like to sign a multi-year contract that would guarantee him several more years of security.

"Who doesn't want a long-term deal?" Nelson says. "Everybody wants that security. … I love the Magic organization … but at the end of the day, I have to do what's best for me and my family."

Nelson is owed $7.8 million next season.
