Tania Ganguli of the Florida Times Union reports that the Jaguars have opened long-term extension talks with free agent Marcedes Lewis.
Lewis, 27 in May, remained his usual dominant run-blocking self in 2010 while racking up career bests in catches (58), yards (700), and touchdowns (10). He had not scored more than two TDs in any previous season. The Jags should be a bit concerned with Lewis' sudden contract-year explosion, but they're not going to let him get away even if it means using the franchise tag.
I hope we get it done since Lewis is one of the best TE's in the NFL, however if we don't then I won't be too disappointed because we have a hell of a backup in Zach Miller who could be a starter and reminds me of a Owen Daniels/Dallas Clark.

Hes a great TE but I don't think we NEED him. Zach Miller can be more explosive in the passing game.

Thats true, Zach Miller is an excellent TE to, but I'd rather have Lewis. I was a big fan of his and MJD at UCLA.

I've always been a fan of Marcedes, I just look at it this way.

If we sign him, then we'll get a possibly top 3 TE for a long time. If we don't then Zach Miller steps up and we will get a 3rd round compensation pick next year.
