The goalie-strapped New York Islanders acquired former first-round pick Al Montoya from the Phoenix Coyotes on Wednesday in exchange for a sixth-round pick in the 2011 Entry Draft.

The Islanders lost their latest starter, Kevin Poulin, with a dislocated left kneecap in the warmups before Tuesday's game with Toronto. They are already without starter Rick DiPietro (facial fractures) and Nathan Lawson (knee). Rookie Mikko Koskinen was called on to make his NHL debut Tuesday night and allowed five goals in a 5-3 loss to the Leafs. The Isles had to rush Joel Martin, recently promoted to backup in Bridgeport when Koskinen was called up to replace DiPietro, to serve as Koskinen's backup on Tuesday -- he arrived during the second period.

Montoya, who turns 26 on Sunday, was taken by the Rangers with the sixth pick in the 2004 Entry Draft after two seasons at the University of Michigan but never played a game in New York. He spent one more season with the Wolverines and three in the Rangers' minor-league system before being traded to Phoenix.
He has spent almost all of the last three-plus seasons with the Coyotes' AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage -- his lone NHL playing time came in 2008-09, when he went 3-1-0 in four games with Phoenix, posting a 2.08 goals-against average, a .921 save percentage and one shutout.

He is 11-8-0 with a 3.19 goals-against average and .891 save percentage in 21 games with San Antonio this season.

The Islanders play again Thursday at Montreal and return home Friday for a game against Pittsburgh.
