Is WAR the end-all, be-all stat?

I saw this on PSD. Should WAR be the stats that determines awards. Many will argue that since Mike Trout has an outstanding WAR, he should win the MVP (I do have Trout as my winner, but Cabrera will probably get it)..

Discuss. I think this should be an interesting baseball discussion.

No. It should be heavily used, but we should still look to other sabermetrics along with some traditional stats.

I also saw this: During the 2012 season, the Toronto Blue Jays employed an infield shift against some left-handed batters, such as David Ortiz or Carlos Peña, in which third baseman Brett Lawrie would be assigned to shallow right field. This resulted in a very high Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) total for Lawrie,[21] and hence a high rWAR, which uses DRS as a component.[22] Ben Jedlovec, an analyst for DRS creator Baseball Info Solutions, said that Lawrie was "making plays in places where very few third basemen are making those plays" because of the "very optimal positioning by the Blue Jays".

That is a good point you bring up. It shows why using your eyes is also such an important way to analyze the game as well. You can't rely entirely on numbers.

WAR is definitely my favourite stat though.

WAR just helps put a number on a bunch of things so we dont have to look at 20 different numbers
it is not the end all be all

Defensive saber stats are still heavily flawed. Brett is an amazing fielder, nonetheless.

wrc+ is the best if we're talking offensive stats imo.

I use WAR as a final conformation. Definitely not the first stat I look at.

The only thing I don't like about OPS is that involves too much use of total bases.

Too much factors into total bases.

While I think OPS and OPS+ is a good stat, I think WAR and sabermetrics in general is dumb.

You can't always rely on traditional stats especially when it comes to fielding.

Errors and fielding percentage don't tell anything about how well a player fields.

Wins is the best stat when it comes to evaluating a pitcher's skills.
