GREENBURGH, N.Y. - Patrick Ewing Jr. slipped his head out of the door leading to the locker room yesterday at the Knicks' practice facility, almost as if to see if the coast was clear.
He was decked out in blue Knicks practice garb. Once he saw a few players still finishing up their post-practice shooting drills and noting that the media hadn't vacated the premises yet, he ducked back inside.
It was the second straight day Ewing was spotted around the team. He also attended Friday night's win over the Oklahoma City Thunder at Madison Square Garden.
So could this mean that the end of the Stephon Marbury saga finally is near?
Just the fact that Ewing is around is reason to raise an eyebrow. It hints that something could be brewing and that he eventually could take Marbury's roster spot if the guard and the Knicks ever come to terms on a buyout, which could happen sometime within the next week or so.
Ewing could have elected to go to the NBA's Developmental League, but he kept his name out of the draft. He also has offers to play abroad and hasn't jumped on any of them, possibly signaling he's holding out until something happens with the Knicks, who expressed interest in bringing him back after he was the final roster cut Oct. 27.
Marbury, who didn't practice with the team Thursday but was seen shooting jumpers after practice yesterday, didn't speak with the media.
The Knicks - who are owned by Cablevision, which also owns Newsday - are trying to keep the focus off the unwanted $21.9-million point guard.
It is believed that Marbury was given permission to look for other opportunities around the league, and until he has a concrete offer, the Knicks won't waive him. They want to have a buyout agreement in place before Marbury is put on waivers. He would need 48 hours to clear waivers before becoming a free agent, eligible to sign with any team.
