This has been an intriguing topic to me personally, so thought I'd write up a quick article on it. Both players are expected to start for Minnesota this season, and both are strong rebounders, and post players, so the question then becomes, how do they play together and get the job done without disrupting each others' games?
First off, I think they need to use Williams the way he was used in college. Kevin Love has been playing a lot of post over the last year and half, and they need to make that even more. Williams needs to have the ability to face the bucket at the three-point line, and either take the shot, or drive the ball hard to the bucket. He's got a lot quicker first step than most defensive players can guard, and he has moves when he reaches the paint on the drive that I haven't seen in quite some time. His spin move off the dribble is amazing, and normally freezes defenders which allows Williams to power out of his move and up for a dunk. That's the way I believe they should use Williams.
So we've discussed how they should use Derrick Williams, let's now take a look at how I believe that they should use Kevin Love. Love has a great post move, but they've had him facing the bucket just like I've said they should use Williams. They have to put Love farther down into the post to clear out room for Williams. They have to be able to communicate between each other as well, because when Williams is about to drive, they need to move Love out of the lane. Basically I just have Love with his back to the bucket, and if he gets the ball he has the ability to face up, or make a post move.
Needless to say, it's going to be difficult for the two of them to work together to get the job done, but I think it's very possible. If they do get things figured out, they could be a lethal duo, that's for sure, but it will be a difficult duo to get figured out to begin with.
What do you guys think about this read? Do you agree with me, or do you have any other ideas on how well the two will play together? Would love to get your opinions on this.
