Hawks won't re-sign coach Woodson

The Atlanta Hawks have let coach Mike Woodson go after advancing to their third straight playoffs.

Woodson's contract had expired Monday, and the Hawks decided to go in a new direction for their coach, NBA.com reported.

Woodson's Hawks had advanced to the second round of the playoffs for the second consecutive season, winning 53 games in the regular season, beating the Milwaukee Bucks in seven games before being swept by the Magic, as Orlando recorded the largest margin of victory in any four-game sweep in NBA postseason history.

The Hawks won 47 games last season, and had improved on their record every season since Woodson's first with the team in 2004-05, when they won just 13.

But Woodson's Hawks were 11-18 in the postseason. -ESPN

I don't know. It just seems that they kept getting better and bringing a new coach in might make Joe Johnson want to leave now dont ya think?

I am thinking along the same the lines...the Hawks are so close, they get better every year. For a team that doesn't have the resources to have the kind of offseasons the Celtics, Cavs, and Magic do, I think Woodson has done a fantastic job. Woodson gets the most of his players and you can credit the Hawks' improving defense to him.

I think Woodson would be gold in Cleveland. Bring in Woodson and let him sell LeBron on why staying in Cleveland is the right option. In the end, Woodson has no problem finding another job.

LOL omg yall do not know much about the Hawks organization. No Lie Woody gets credit for helping improve our record but he also has done just as much wrong as he has done right. The Cavs wouldn't want Woody because honestly he did the same thing as Mike Brown. Let his best player run iso then ended the seasons with underachievement. He's the reason J-Chillz left and with a new coach he might return. Not to mention he's horrible when it comes to managing minutes for players. We signed Jason Collins and Joe Smith to help against tough teams and they barely played the whole season. Not to mention he's not the best at developing young talent. Most of the progression we've made is because the players self-improvement. If Woody knows how to get the most out of his players what happened in the Orlando series? the Cleveland Series? Heck even against the bucks and heat he got out coached. He's great in the regular season but he's not great at team preparation in the playoffs. Which is why we want a coach thats not going to just let JJ run iso all day.

Not a good plan Hawks. This will just turn out bad. Joe will leave and a new coach might not work out so well. Back to re-tooling mode for Atlanta.

The Heck are you talking about? Did you not watch the Orlando series at all? I really don't see how any of yall think he's such a great coach now when he's gone yet our team didn't matter when he was coaching..

Re-Tooling? LOL thats just dumb man retooling is when you have to actually replace at least more then one starter. We only lose one coach and you acting like our whole team revolved around him smh.

This is a classic case of addition by subtraction.

Sorry $tunna, I have to say you sound very angry and bitter by the post-season exit right now. I'm not gonna sit here and make Woodson sound like any kind of a Godsend but he's a great coach.

Atlanta may not technically be "re-tooling" but a new head coach and the exit of Joe Johnson won't leave the team in any better position to compete in 2010-11 or 11-12.

It's not that I'm just frustrated that yall don't understand the situation the same way I do. I know Mike Woodson did well but in no way is he a top tier coach. If you look into it he actually showed alot of favoritism and the franchise felt that the locker room needed a new voice. Alot of players stopped listening to him altogether in the playoffs this year. Not to mention he really just let JJ run the show a little too much. I'm just saying no re-signing him isn't a bad thing. If anything I think it helps us to raise the bar and expectations in the lockerroom. You saw the way the Bucks had confidence against us without their best player and best scorer? Woody gets outcoached almost every year in the playoffs smh.
