Montreal Canadiens defenseman Hal Gill has been hospitalized by a virus that has kept him out of action since Sunday, according to a report from Renaud Lavoie of RDS.

Gill was already going to miss Thursday night’s game against the Islanders in Long Island, but he will also miss Saturday night’s home game against the New York Rangers, according to Lavoie.

The loss of Gill and fellow veteran Jaroslav Spacek to an upper-body injury has left the Canadiens blue line extremely young. Josh Gorges is the only other member of the Montreal defense that has played in more than 100 NHL regular-season games.

P.K. Subban is its second-most experienced player with 97 career games going into Thursday night’s contest in Long Island. Following him are Yannick Weber (67), Raphael Diaz (18), Alexei Emelin (10) and Frederic St-Denis, who made his NHL debut in Wednesday's 4-0 home win against Carolina.
