Ha Ha Clinton-Dix was pegged as a sure-fire top 10 pick a while before the draft, but after several teams decided to fill needs at linebacker and cornerback, the Packers have a Week 1 starting safety fall into their laps at pick no. 21.
Ted Thompson looks pretty smart for not overpaying a free agent safety at this point. Let's hope Morgan Burnett can regain some mojo now that he has a competent partner next to him and will have an entire offseason to get right both mentally and physically.
The scouting report on Clinton-Dix is that he covers a lot of ground, has great man-to-man coverage skills, is an above-average tackler in open space, and is very quick, but doesn't have elite speed. I would compare him to Eric Berry or Michael Griffen in terms of body type and skill set.
I'm not sure how you can dislike this selection unless you were so disappointed in not getting C.J. Mosley that you turned off your TV, started drinking straight from the bottle, and didn't watch the rest of the draft. This appears to be a home run for the Packers, and should help the defense with a difference maker in the back end of the secondary that has been missing since Nick Collins went down in early 2011.
