Reports from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution cite the Memphis Grizzlies have signed Josh Smith to a $58 million offer sheet. Although the Hawks have previously sworn to match any offer given to Smith, Memphis was never expected to be in the market for the forward. With an abundance of cap space, the Grizzlies were thought to be saving money for the 2009 free agency season.
Smith, coming off a career year, will now wait as Atlanta has seven days to match the Grizzlies' offer. Wallace Prather, Smith's agent, confirmed talks but declined to give details.
