From the invaluable Blazersedge comes this nugget of awful news about Greg Oden:

Blazers Acting GM Chad Buchanan: After 2 weeks, C Greg Oden is still not cleared medically for L knee surgery because of ankle blood clots

From the sound of that, it could be a long while before the #1 pick in the 2007 draft is actually playing basketball again. Hopefully Oden can make an NBA return at some point down the line, but the day will come soon when the Blazers will have to decide how long they want to keep their ultra-talented but stunningly brittle young center, especially since he’s still making good money.
When you're not even healthy enough to have surgery you know that's very very bad lol

feel bad for him and the blazers. They could've have a even better team if all these guys didn't get injured and shit. But sad to say just retire greg.

I don't want him to retire. I don't care if he misses the next 5 years, then finally gets healthy. I just want to see him on the court at some point.

He needs to back away from everything for a while though. (which will likely happen, because I don't see anyone signing him)

He needs to focus 110% on getting healthy, but not pushing himself to come back.

he can't stay healthy. even if he stays out of the game for a couple of years and comes back, dude will more than likely get hurt. Some people's bodies just don't hold up well.

Problem is every time he gets a surgery, recovers, and starts to try and strengthen his knees and get into shape, he undergoes the knife again. He can't even get through the strengthening process of the recoveries. It's sad this is such a problem, but I think we all realize the inevitable -- he's going to retire, or at least walk away for a few years. But Retirement is seeming more and more likely.

I just feel like this is all proof that his age is a lie.

Supposedly he was like 20 when this picture was taken, yeah lol

Can't help but to feel bad for the big guy. Wonder what he could have been had he stayed healthy.

He hasnt played an NBA game in 3 years. He's been in the league 4 seasons and has only played 82 games. Its time for Greg to just let it go and move on, its just not worth it anymore. Although he is very young, he didnt walk like a normal athlete and I think his bones were just too fragile for him to exert so much force on them playing the game of basketball.

Dude just can't get anything to go his way, really feel bad for Greg. The sad thing is I'm seeing Blazer fans on Facebook saying how much they hate Oden, this was beyond his control no reason to hate the guy. I understand the frusteration but like it or not Oden was the correct pick at the time of the draft, obviously knowing what we know now it's easy to say we should've taken Durant but at the time Oden was the right pick. Gotta work with how the situation as it is and not how we wish it was.

Oden was a more filled out Anthony Davis, it really is a shame this has all happened to him.

Always terrible to see a career derailed by injuries. Too bad that he'll have to deal with the "What If?" questions for the rest of his life.

I feel bad for him but at some point he just needs to retire. Hopefully for the Blazers and his knees it's very soon.

Greg Oden has no intention of calling it quits, according to a source close to the situation.

"It's hard to put into words the heartbreak for everyone involved, but especially for Greg," said Blazers president Larry Miller. "He's a young man who has experienced a great number of physical challenges in his playing career and today is yet another significant setback for him. We have a lot of empathy for Greg and his family during this difficult time."

Oden has appeared in just 82 games over the last five seasons.

"Greg's still very young, in relative terms, for a professional basketball player," acting GM Chad Buchanan told reporters. "He's recovered from a couple of these before. His last two microfracture lesions have healed fine. So there's no reason to think he couldn't come back as long as he shows the work ethic and desire that he's had in the past to come back. I think it's premature to speculate anything beyond that."
