Even before the Pistons made the bold move of hiring Stan Van Gundy to be their coach and run their basketball operations on Tuesday, there was a growing consensus around the league that whomever was tabbed to replace Joe Dumars in the front office would be willing to let restricted free agent Greg Monroe go.

Now, with Van Gundy in place on an eyebrow-raising contractfive years, $35 millionthere is near certainty among league executives that Monroe has played his last game for Detroit.

Multiple league executives said that New Orleans, where Monroe is from, would be on his list, and it is easy to imagine a pairing of Monroe with young star big man Anthony Davis.
Honestly don't know what to think of that. I mean I guess I would like him to come play C, but how do you fit a three man rotation of Monroe, Anthony Davis, and Ryan Anderson? All those guys should be getting 32+ minutes a night. He would improve our ball movement and athleticism though, but I'm worried that his jumper has gotten worse over the last two seasons. I don't have much interest in putting someone next to AD that teams don't really have to respect away from the rim.

Biggest thing is the money though, I wouldn't give him 12-15 a year.

Seen a report that we will let him go. Another report said SVG thinks highly of him and that he even contacted Monroe last night after he was hired.

But I certainly don't think we will let a 6'10" talented big walk for nothing. Either a S&T or we bite the bullet and resign him and go from there. These floating rumors on Twitter that we will let him walk are ridiculous IMO.

Not sure how SVG wants to build this team though. If he is going for the Dwight-model, then Smith and Monroe really don't fit.

If the CAP rises to 63 million as projected, I believe we will be more than 20 million under that number. So if Greg gets the max, or close to it, I don't think we would be in cap hell. And that's assuming we don't make any other moves (ala trying to move Smith)

But like I said. You pay him now then worry about it later. You don't let an asset walk for absolutely nothing as your first order of business on the job.

i think a gmoe and ad combo is nice but i want no part of eric. maybe we swing him for ryan anderson? still would need to send more money iurway and wed need to get rid of smoove.

regardless smoove and gmoe don't fit with svg. going to be an interesting off season and im jacked, for now.

Pistons fans say they'd need more than Ryan Anderson for Greg Monroe. But Pelican fans say they aren't sure if they would even send Anderson for Monroe, much less more.

theyre idiots if they wouldnt deal ryan for gmoe. gmoe is the better player, overall, but ryan fits our biggest need and has experience with our new coach.

I wouldn't move Ryno for Monroe. There's a couple factors that weigh in as well. I don't think it's necessarily always about the better player, because the better player may not be the better fit for your team. I would hope Dell has learned from the Eric Gordon mistake, you don't pay a guy 12-15M a year to be your 3rd or 4th option. I would be open to moving Ryan, but it has to be the right guy. I have said in the past that he may not be the Pelicans best player, but I do believe that he's the Pelicans most important offensive player to success. I don't think Monroe is the right guy, especially for the salary he's likely to ask.

Listened to an interview SVG had. Raved about Drummond and Monroe. Wants to get shooters around them. Didn't mention Smith or Jennings in his interview though.

However all he did mention by name was Drummond and Monroe though. Called Greg a top 10 big in the league. Idk, didn't really sound like he wants to move him. Seemed excited about Dre and Monroe together.

The problem is that Josh Smith cannot start at SF, and everybody knows that. And nobody is willing to trade for his horrendous contract, unless you are willing to take worse deals back (ie Gerald Wallace). So either you bench your highest paid player, which is terrible for your team (although I guess Boston is doing that too, but Wallace sucks), or you move Monroe. Ideally, you don't move Greg and he and Dre form a great duo. But since they probably want to play Smith after such a huge investment, they are going to be forced to trade Monroe for some perimeter scoring.

Not his investment. I'm sure he is going to try to move Smith for whatever he can. I'm sure some team will bite on him. We had interest at the deadline this season, but Dumars was too moronic to make a move.

rip, hes not going to come in and say he needs to move greg. that shows teams we're willing to let him walk and may hurt his trade value.
