More reasons to love Roger Goodell...
Long story short, Goodell held a conference call from his offices in NY Friday. On the other end of the phone lines were the 17 NFL Referees who have felt beleaguered, following some controversial calls made during the young 2008 season.
Goodell gave his officials a "pep talk", acknowledging that mistakes will happen, everyone is human...and you cannot allow the few mistakes to down the confidence you have in a majority of calls you have to make.
19-year veteran Ed Hochuli's controversial call made in week 2 has placed many officiating crews under the microscope all season long, drawing heavy criticism. League sources cite a positive response from officials following the bode of confidence from the Commissioner.
Definitely something that needed to happen. It has been painful to watch Hochuli make calls during games, since his week 2 error. Those that watched last Monday Night's game, saw how thorough Hochuli is when it comes to explaining why nearly every penalty flag is thrown.
For the most part, NFL Officials do a great job in what they do. Are controversial calls and errors made at times...of course...it happens with every sport & that's just the nature of the beast. There's no doubt their job isn't easy and I don't think the media or members of the League (Jerry Jones, Sean Payton, James Harrison, etc.) have been fair in their constant criticism.
I love Goodell standing by his officials and giving them the "forget about it and move on" speech. I spent some time as a Pop-Warner Football Ref & as a little umpire in my hometown. Even at that level, not an easy gig. A lot of things to pay attention to & sometimes you miss calls or make the wrong ones.
I do feel as though the good outweighs the bad when it comes to the NFL's Officiating. -AE
