Giants Sign Thurmond & Demps

The Giants are scheduled to meet with cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on Sunday and they’ll be doing it with a newly signed cornerback already in their pocket.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the Giants have agreed to terms with former Seahawks corner Walter Thurmond. It’s a one-year deal, per Schefter, and the Giants are still expected to meet with Rodgers-Cromartie.

With Thurmond joining Prince Amukamara and Trumaine McBride at cornerback, the Giants don’t need to break the bank to bring Rodgers-Cromartie into the fold. Should the price be right, though, they’d have one of the deeper cornerback groups in the league to throw out on the field against opposing offenses next season. That should come in handy whether or not the Giants are able to boost their pass rush over the rest of the offseason.

The early Sunday morning signing was part of a busy overnight for the Giants. Safety and kick returner Quintin Demps announced in the wee small hours of the morning that he signed with the Giants. Demps averaged over 30 yards per kick return in Kansas City last season and scored a touchdown, which is what the Giants will be looking for after missing out on Jacoby Jones earlier in free agency.

Giants Meeting with DRC

The Giants will get a face-to-face meeting with the top unrestricted free agent left on the market.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports the Giants will host Broncos cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie on Sunday. Rodgers-Cromartie huddled with the Jets on Saturday.

The 27-year-old Rodgers-Cromartie is the fourth-ranked cornerback and 12th-ranked player in PFT’s free agent rankings. The 6-foot-2, 193-pound Rodgers-Cromartie has ideal size and athleticism for his position, and he’s intercepted 19 passes in six NFL seasons. An above-average starter, Rodgers-Cromartie would figure as one of the Giants’ top two cornerbacks were he to sign.

Where Rodgers-Cromartie ends up is one of the more compelling storylines left in free agency. He turned down a lucrative multi-year deal to re-sign with the Broncos, who signed the Patriots’ Aqib Talib to replace him.

Now, it appears Rodgers-Cromartie will visit another potential suitor on the sixth day of free agency.

Giants Meeting with Anthony Spencer

Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reported early on Sunday that Spencer was set to visit the Rams on Sunday, but he has retracted that report and now reports that Spencer will be visiting the Cowboys’ division rivals in New Jersey. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network also reports that Spencer will be taking a visit with the Giants.

The Giants saw Justin Tuck sign with Oakland last week, leaving them with an opening for a veteran defensive end to go with Jason Pierre-Paul and Mathias Kiwanuka. Spencer missed all but one game last season after having microfracture and isn’t expected to be 100 percent for the start of training camp, which would likely make him a reasonably priced gamble for a Giants team that saw its once fearsome pass rush lose its bite last season.

I'll be thrilled if we get Rodgers-Cromartie. Would be huge. Major upgrade from Webster.

If Anthony Spencer is even close to the player he was before microfracture, you'd get a stud. Something many Dallas fans overlooked because of DWare's sack totals is that Spencer was better at everything else. When he was getting sacks and hits on QBs, he was an absolute force on this defense. I'd even argue the defense's best player two seasons ago. Be happy if you sign him.

The secondary was already the best unit on this pretty good defense. Now elite on papery with Prince on the other side, Thurmond in the slot, and Rolle, Hill, and Brown in the back. We still need a WR/TE and could use another OL but if they pickup Donald in the first this D will be terrifying.

Giants can fill some holes in the draft too. Definitely O line first round, then 2nd round either TE or DT depending on who else we sign/who's available.

That seems to be your solution to everything. There's no need to overpay free agents who don't fit the system. You should know as well as anyone that doing that never works.
