New York Giants cornerback Prince Amukamara suffered what coach Tom Coughlin characterized as a "moderate" high ankle sprain during Friday night's 20-17 preseason loss to the Chicago Bears.

Coughlin told reporters on a conference call Saturday that he didn't have a timetable on when Amukamara would return.

"Unfortunately, (a high ankle sprain is) longer than you would like them to be," the coach said. "Depending on how much damage there is and how much he can tolerate.

"You see some of them go on a long time. You see some come relatively quickly. ... If I were to say two weeks or three weeks, I would just be guessing."

The Giants lost another cornerback, Terrell Thomas, in training camp when he re-injured his surgically repaired anterior cruciate ligament.

Despite the losses at the position, Coughlin was non-committal about pursuing free-agent cornerbacks to fill in, instead suggesting that help for the Giants would come from within.

"We'll always scan and look and try to find if there are people out there that can help us," Coughlin said. "It's that time of year. It's difficult to assess if there are people out there that can help us."

Notes: Linebacker Mathias Kiwanuka strained his groin in the final play of the second half against the Bears. Coughlin said Kiwanuka was sore, but he didn't know the linebacker's status for the next preseason game. ... Marvin Austin, who hasn't played a game in three seasons because of various injuries and suspension, has suffered a "setback" with his back injury, Coughlin said.

This sounds a bit like last year. Giants had CB's go down before the season started, and Prince was one of them last year too. I want to see this guy stay healthy because I want to see what he can do. He had high expectations, and I want to see if he can do it at the pro level. Can't when he's not on the field.
