The Boston Red Sox are expected to be a powerhouse this year and one of the driving engines should be first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. The 28-year-old slugger is set to become a free agent at year's end, though Boston is expected to sign him to an extension.
Work on that extension should continue next week when the agent for Gonzalez, John Boggs, swings by the team's camp, according to FOX Sports.
"Adrian wants to be a Boston Red Sox for the long term, and I would anticipate that's going to happen," Boggs said, according to the site. "All along, we planned to [restart talks] once he demonstrated that he's healthy [after offseason shoulder surgery]. And he's in the lineup now. At this point, he's ahead of schedule."
Gonzalez, of course, is joining the Sox after a December trade with the Padres, where he played for five years. An extension was attempted at that point but couldn't be finalized.
