Took this from another board, thought it was a great idea:

So I thought up a game for those wannabe GM's out there. It's based on the 2004 Expansion Draft when the Bobcats joined the league.

So imagine you are the brand new GM of a brand new NBA franchise - the Hometown Hoop-Heroes, or whatever - and your first order of business is assembling your team.

The NBA has given you the No. 4 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft as a starting point. And they are holding a league wide Expansion Draft for you to fill out the rest of your roster.

Here are the rules:
  • Every NBA team is allowed to protect 8 of their players currently under contract.
  • The remaining unprotected players are all fair game for you to select.
  • However, you can only select one player from each franchise. No more.
  • When you select a player you will pick up their existing contract (details will be provided).
  • You must select 11 players in the expansion draft.
Below is the list of protected and unprotected players for each team:

As I mentioned earlier, you also have the fourth pick in the 2014 draft which will be your 12th and final player. So please also include which player you will select from the likely prospects (check out NBADraft.net or Draftexpress.com if you aren't sure). However, using my crystal ball I have seen that the top 3 picks are Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle and Jabari Parker - thus they are unavailable.

If you have a problem with the players I have protected/unprotected from your team, let me know. Happy to change up the lists. I did a quick job but tried to factor in talent, salary, age, etc.

Post your fully assembled team below... Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.

Well put together. I have a couple of complaints about the list of protected players, I'll just put them in bullets:

- I don't get the logic of Brooklyn not protecting Joe Johnson; they're clearly in win-now mode.
- I think Chicago would protect either Tony Snell or Marquis Teague (more likely Snell) over Boozer who they are already seem to be trying to get rid of (amnesty?). In an expansion situation, a guy like Snell or Teague is FAR more likely to get drafted than Boozer because the expansion team is going to try to find cheap talent with the potential to grow rather than a large salary guy like Carlos, thus the Bulls would be more likely to dangle Carlos and protect their younger guys in hopes that the expansion team bites.
- Protecting almost-37-year-old Vince Carter expiring contract over Shane Larkin (18th overall draft pick) doesn't make much sense.
- I feel like the Pistons list probably also has flaws to it but I'll leave that for the actual Pistons' fans on here to decide, as they'd know better than I would.
- Definitely can't see the Heat leaving Udonis Haslem unprotected; I'd switch him with Birdman or Beasley.
- The Bucks are high on Gary Neal, he wouldn't go unprotected. Hard to say who to switch him with though.
- I'd switch Darius Morris with Arnett Moultrie (a first round pick) for the 76ers.
- Don't think the Blazers would want to part with Leonard that easily, I'd switch him with Mo Williams who is expendable when McCollum becomes healthy.

Also should point out that expansion teams have a smaller salary cap than the other teams for a few years, I think it's something like 2/3rds of it.

I think I would go for a blend of young talent that could possibly be developed, and a couple veterans.

PG: Robinson/Farmar/Teague
SG: Brooks/Karasov
SF: Budinger/Mbah a Moute
PF: Davis/Bass/Motiejunas
C: Pachulia/Leonard

And for the draft I would pick Dante Exum.

Aaron Brooks plays with Motiejunas, Marshon plays with Bass. You gotta fix something
