ALBANY, N.Y. - Eli Manning has agreed to a new six-year, $97 million contract extension with the New York Giants that will make him the highest paid player in the NFL with an average salary of roughly $15.3 million.

A person close to the talks who asked not to be identified says Manning is guaranteed $35 million under the deal that will keep him with the Giants through the 2015 season. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not signed and had not been announced.

There is a chance the deal could be signed Wednesday, but both sides wanted to review the contract, the person said.
Manning, who led the Giants to a Super Bowl upset of the New England Patriots in February 2008 and was named the MVP of the game, was in the final year of the contract he signed as the No. 1 overall pick in 2004. He will make $9.4 million under that deal this season.

Tom Condon, Manning's agent, was not immediately available for comment. The Giants had no immediate comment.

This deal will give Manning an average salary that is roughly $200,000 higher than the one earned by All-Pro cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha of the Oakland Raiders. He agreed to a three-year, $45.3 million contract this year.

The salary obviously also is higher than that earned by Manning's big brother, Peyton. The Indianapolis Colts quarterback earns an average of $14.17 million annually.

The two sides have been discussing a contract for months, but they worked out the last details in recent days.

While Manning's contract was to expire at the end of this season, there was little chance the Giants would lose him to free agency. They could have named him a franchise player and Manning has long said he wants to remain with the Giants.

Eli Manning took over as the Giants starter midway through his rookie season and he has led New York to the playoffs in each of the past four seasons.

Wow, that is a dang lot of money... but you had to figure he would just absolutely cash out on his payday.

This is the SMH move of the year.

97 million dollars, for Eli Manning.
I mean, if it was Brees, Brady, or Peyton, sure.
But Eli.
SMFH.

I was thinking at least $60-$70 Million. But $97 Million, oh hell no.

Reese knows what he's doing. I'm behind him 100% on giving Eli the money he deserves.

lol, thanks for proving my point. There's absolutely no reason he deserves this contract so you resorted to taking a cheap jab at my team..a clearly wrong one at that, but w/e, I didn't expect any different.

What's new?

Every single offseaon a new player becomes the highest paid player in the league, hasn't it changed like 3x already this offseason?

Ill say it is a lot of money for him, but he's won a SB. and was a huge part in why we won that year. So that alone warrants money. 97mil? Idk but there aren't many players worth 97mil anyway.

How many rings does McScrub have? The same McScrub who got benched for a rookie and didn't know that games can end in ties? How many times has he missed the playoffs and been injured?

I'm sorry Manning has 1 SB so I forgot he's better than QB's that don't have one, my mistake.

Honestly, biased, warped sense of everything aside, there's no way you can say Eli deserves it more than Peyton or Brady or Brees.

What has he done that they haven't?

Even though I hate Tony Romo he is better than Eli. Don't take jabs at my team pats. I still think you guys got lucky in the superbowl. We beat you guys in Week 17 and lost in the Superbowl.

"Tom Brady hit Randy Moss with a 65-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter". I think you guys spygated too allowing Randy Moss a 65-yard td in Week 17. But then locked him down allowing one td and 62 yards. In the Superbowl???

What about the rest of my questions about McPhail? Eli beat a team in the superbowl that was 18-0 and known for cheating, and being the first team to win 4 road games in the playoffs, three of which were against teams who the Giants couldn't beat in that same regular season.

Got shooked? Yeah, indeed he did....I guess? Lol. Anyways, get owned? You're the one who accused a team of cheating because they SHUT DOWN Randy Moss in the super bowl. Yeaaah, I got owned alright...

I don't have to answer anything about McNabb because the stats can suffice..though I know they don't mean anything to you unless they show your team or player is better than all the rest.

Eli beat a team in the superbowl that was 18-0 and known for cheating, and being the first team to win 4 road games in the playoffs, three of which were against teams who the Giants couldn't beat in that same regular season.
A) Eli beat them? A TEAM wins the Super Bowl...

B) Again with the pot shots against my team. If Eli was so great, and the Giants also as great, then you wouldn't need to throw words around to try and downgrade someone else.
