While Chicago Bears running back Matt Forte and Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson have publicly whined about how their respective teams have handled their possible contract extensions, New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees has been quiet about his in-season negotiations.
He's talking now, but not complaining. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reports that Brees has tabled all contract talks with the team until after the season ends. "You know, I didn't want it to become a distraction," Brees told the paper. "And from the discussions we had, going back and forth, there was no progress really being made. I really wanted to just focus on football. It's been tabled for now ... and just hopefully will resume when the time is right."
The Saints are 10-3 and have a shot at winning the team's second Super Bowl in three years and Brees doesn't want to tamper with that possibility. The sides were pretty far apart on numbers, according to the Times-Picayune, with the 32-year-old Brees wanting to be paid along the lines of what Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Michael Vick are making: anywhere from around $72 million to $100 million.
Whatever happens, there is little doubt that Brees and the Saints will eventually get a deal done to keep him in the Big Easy.
