The Dolphins changed backup quarterbacks Tuesday, signing J.P. Losman to replace Sage Rosenfels, who is still feeling the effects of a blood infection from August.

But on two looming issues — their next coach and their next quarterback — clarity won’t come for a while. Some developments this week on both fronts:

• CBSSports.com reported Tuesday that intermediaries for the Dolphins have contacted people close to Bill Cowher about Cowher becoming Miami’s coach.

The Dolphins declined to comment about the report, but a source close to owner Stephen Ross said neither Ross nor any team officials have contacted Cowher or his representatives because Ross is careful about conducting a coaching search the right way after he was criticized in January for meeting with then-Stanford coach Jim Harbaugh with Tony Sparano still employed as the Dolphins’ coach.

Still, the source said it would not be surprising if an associate of Ross reached out indirectly to Cowher, who is very high on the Dolphins’ list of potential replacements for Sparano. The Dolphins have strong interest in Cowher and former Tennessee coach Jeff Fisher, and also would consider Jon Gruden, whose recent five-year extension with ESPN does not prevent him from pursuing a coaching job.

Gruden has told ESPN that he intends to remain in broadcasting, according to a network source. But a friend of Gruden said the idea of coaching a marquee NFL franchise still holds some appeal to him.

Cowher would not consider talking to the Dolphins or any other team while a coach is still in place, according to a close associate. Cowher, a CBS analyst, reportedly will consider coaching offers after this season but there’s no guarantee he will take a job. Cowher, who won a Super Bowl in February 2006, was 149-90-1 in 15 seasons with Pittsburgh before stepping down in January 2007.

Interesting. Im not surprised they would want Cowher, but I don't think they give him the best chance to win.
