Sucks that he didn't get that much playing time this year but I hope he does good in Japan.TORONTO -- The Blue Jays granted first baseman Randy Ruiz his release on Wednesday, allowing him to sign a contract wuth the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles of the Japan Pacific League.
Outfielder Jeremy Reed was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas to assume Ruiz's place on Toronto's active roster. Toronto also activated left-hander Marc Rzepczynski from the 15-day disabled list and optioned the pitcher to Triple-A.
The 32-year-old Ruiz hit .150 with one home run over 13 games this season for the Blue Jays, who recently began working him into the lineup more often each week. After a strong showing with the Jays late last season, Ruiz earned a spot on the club's Opening Day roster this year, though his playing time was sporadic.
Reed, 28, appeared in two games for the Blue Jays earlier this season, but was returned to Triple-A after the club acquired outfielder Fred Lewis in a trade with the Giants on April 15. Reed impressed Toronto during Spring Training and hit .265 with two home runs and nine RBIs in 31 games for Las Vegas this year.
