CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The Carolina Panthers have cut Jake Delhomme, just over a year after they gave him a lucrative contract extension only to watch him have his worst season as a pro.

Agent Rick Smith confirmed the move late Thursday. It signals the Panthers intend to go with Matt Moore or someone new at quarterback for the first time since Delhomme burst onto the scene in 2003 and led Carolina to the Super Bowl.

After committing six turnovers in a playoff loss to end the 2008 season, Delhomme had 18 interceptions last year before being sidelined for the final five games with a broken finger.

The Panthers still owe the 35-year-old Delhomme about $12.5 million in guaranteed money.

Carolina also released veteran defensive tackle Damione Lewis.

Yeah no kidding. IDK why they gave him that contract anyways. He was never worth that money.

Matt Moore in my opinion still has a boat load of potential. Looks like the rest of the NFC South will be pissed off with this cut of Delhomme. Lol.

LOL

Two-of-three franchise players are gone from Carolina.

Y'all will be re-building for a while.

Oh well, Jake is on NFL Network all choked up at his conference.

Pre-2008 Postseason, I would consider him a 'Franchise' player.

I don't know what's going to become of Carolina. Seems like last years Bucs.

you know we went 5-1 with Moore right? and we still have one of the best running duo's in the league

unlike the Bucs we have good players, we only lost a QB that made our team worse and a franchise player that only came to play when he felt like it

if anything our team is going to be better

Peppers will (hopefully) be replaced by someone like Kampman who can get 8-12 sacks going back to a 4-3. We are getting younger at LB which to me is good. Our line will be healthy, which is always good when you have the top OT tandem in the league. A QB on the rise, who played extremely well at the end of the season once he actually played... I'd like to think this team is going places.

I'm aware, what are you getting at?

Tampa has good players, and it's not Pepper's fault he didn't want to play.

No, they're not.
