Cleveland Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry is close to parting ways with the franchise less than two weeks after the dismissal of coach Mike Brown, triggering a dramatic reshaping of the team’s brain trust as it desperately tries to retain LeBron James(notes), league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Ferry’s contract ends this summer. He had said after the Cavaliers’ second-round loss to the Boston Celtics that he would speak with owner Dan Gilbert to decide whether it was best for him to continue as GM. Gilbert seemed open to having him stay, but Ferry, who was disappointed about having to fire Brown, a close confidante from their days with the San Antonio Spurs, decided to leave less than a month before James becomes a free agent.

Assistant GM Chris Grant is expected to take over for Ferry.
Well this sucks..

Hmmm. A lot of people said he was going to get a new contract from what I heard. I wonder what he will do now?

My guess is he works as an analyst for some TV station for the 2010-2011 season and then return to the NBA for the 2011-2012 season.

He doesn't want to share his GM position with anyone.. Wants to make the decisions. If we were to get a big time head coach they would want a say in trades and all of that. Dan Gilbert stated a week or two ago how he wanted Ferry back and then all of the sudden just stopped extension talks. It could be pointing towards a big time coach coming in.. But if we don't get any big coach and LeBron does not re-sign, this is pretty bad because Ferry is a really good GM.

They don't have a GM right now? Who is going to make their draft pick? I think he'll take a year or two off.

lol, but I'm interested in seeing him as a GM without someone like LeBron breathing down his neck.

To me this hurts the chance of LeBron coming back.. LeBron was basically co-GM of the Cavs with Ferry there. With him gone, he might not think he has that privilege anymore.

I don't know if some of you can comprehend this, but the firings of Mike Brown and Danny Ferry would not have been made unless it gave the Cavs a better chance at signing LeBron.. There is no way Danny Ferry leaves if he gives us a better chance at LeBron.
