D-Will, King Text on Nets Targets

by Net Income on Apr 10, 2011 7:24 AM EDT

Ric Bucher, who has previously offered optimistic assessments of the Nets' chances of keeping Deron Williams added another late this week in his ESPN chat.

Asked if getting Dwight Howard is key to the Nets' getting D-Will to sign, Bucher replied,

"Getting Dwight Howard would do a lot, but upgrading the roster in general will be the biggest factor. From what I hear, Deron’s family already has been out house-hunting and he regularly texts with Billy King about players that would be good to add to their team. That, at least, sounds like a guy looking to stay."

Williams has said there is a "strong possibility" he will stay but also noted that he wants to see what the Nets do to improve the team.

deron is a franchise player. im not sold on building a team of stars. they need to get him another go-to scorer and then focus on building a complete all around team. theyd be more likely to win that way.. and i think them seeing what has happened in new york and how miami started has showed other teams that a star studded STARTING unit isnt as good as a well rounded complete roster.

Building a complete all around team through FA is going to be harder and harder. I hate to keep dawning on this, but I'll be mature and just use it as an example and not to ridicule - but Travis Outlaw signed for 7m a year. John Salmons 8m a year. Wes Mathews got almost 7m per, same with Al Harrington. Tyrus Thomas got 8m. Gooden almost 7m.

My point here is this - 2 of these guys is the same as getting a max guy and a cheap 1m one. Would you have rather gotten a combination of two of the guys above, or signed something like Amar'e and someone on the veteran min? Building well rounded teams is best left to draft/trades, FA is more for impact guys or the 'one missing piece'.

I know you said that building a team of stars isn't the way to go, but I see no downside to using that cap space on Dwight Howard. Most of the great/championship teams have always had a good wing and a good big. Shaq and Kobe, Shaq and Wade, Stockton and Malone, etc...

I think that building around D-Will and DH12 is the way to go if possible. If Dwight is staying, they should definitely look for non-stars to build a solid starting lineup.

What the Nets have and what they need:

What we have:
Lopez- Legit 20 PPG scorer
Williams- Franchise PG.
Morrow- Deadeye shooter who would be solid as a 6th man
Damion James- Could become a solid defender/rebounder if he can avoid further injuries.
Humphries- If resigned, we have one of the best rebounders in basketball and a workhorse.

What we need:
-Another big, preferably someone that can defend
-perimeter scorer at either the two or three
-defender at the two guard spot

Anything else?

BC, you mentioned only one "wing", and Kobe isn't really a wing either

No, a wing is a SF/SG that goes on the wing of the court as the ball is brought up

Stockton is in no way, a wing lol

And Kobe brings the ball up, as does Wade

Lopez isn't a legit 20 PPG scorer. He does it on an awful team

EDIT: Also one of the worst rebounding centers in the league. Maybe THe worst.

Yeah lol "legit 20 point scorer". If by legit, you mean getting 20.1 PPG on an awful scoring team... Then yeah. Otherwise, no chance.

He averaged over 25 ppg with Deron in the line-up. With Deron in the line-up this year, we averaged well over 105 ppg.

Clown.

Yeah, he's really fighting for points with the likes of Kris Humphries and Travis Outlaw, let me tell you...

Facing double teams in every game makes the feat even better.

Thanks for strengthening my argument.

The point is that Brook Lopez is not a legit 20 point per game scorer. He does it as one of only two viable offensive options (his point guard being the other) on his team, he couldn't score 20 points per game on most teams. That's what a legit 20 point per game scorer does. Pau Gasol is a legit 20 point per game scorer. Brook Lopez is not.

Lmao wtf. How the fuck do you know he wouldn't be able to score 20 on another team? It all depends on the coaching style and how many touches he gets. If he got the touches he would score MORE on a better team. He gets doubled every time he touches it in the post with the Nets. That would not happen if he had a better team, which would result in more points. You are saying that Lopez isn't capable of getting 20 on a better team which is retarded. He may not get the touches on a better team but if he did his shooting % would obviously increase if he didn't get doubled.

So Brook Lopez is a legit 20 points per game scorer. I think Nets fans might be the most idiotic fans I've seen. DWill sure leads me to think that.

Oh, cool response. Fucking homo.
Lopez shoots around 50% every year from the field and is an 80% FT shooter.
If he got the touches, he would put up 20 a game; on any team.

You're an imbecile that bases all of your posts on assumptions and speculation. That much has been proven on this site.

Stick to college basketball and working the deep fryer at Popeye's.
